This will be my first year land trapping, my main target will be coyotes. So in my garage I set the pan tension on my KB's and MB-650's to around 3 pounds. I measured the pan tension by placing a wooden 1" by 1" on the pan and and resting 12" lengths of rebar on top of the 1" by 1" until the trap fired.
I then went and bedded the trap with a screen pan cover and some haylage over that (like Zagman's set). Set like this it took an extra stick of rebar with a little tap to fire the trap. I'm guessing it was between 4 and 5 pounds. Is this OK for coyotes?
Aside from targeting coyote, another reason for me setting the tension above what many would recommend for other land animals is to avoid catching the cats that seem to be running around everywhere.
Thanks.

Should I adjust the tension back to 3 pounds with the screen pan cover on?
Any tips for avoiding cats? Would lure be better than bait at the set for this?

if you don't mind missing some fox your pan tension is fine, as far as the cats go I would not tune my trap in regards to them. my self I would back off the pan tension some gray fox and red in the shed allways look nice. hope this helps best of luck

Thanks, I will back off on the tension a bit.
I've got four spots lined up for sets this weekend. Pretty excited to get into something new!
