Is your 2,000 estimate caught by you alone or you and your partner combined?
Would be a nice pile of finished fur for John to sort thru

mac blathered some sort of nonsense about me not having experience on big marshes, etc or whatever that's supposed to mean. I guess 1,000 acre marshes here locally are small enough for me but 1,300 acre units on Montezuma are something otherwise? You got 1000 acre marshes at home, why in hell do you want to drive all the way to the Montezuma to trap rats? ....at $3.55/gallon and $7.00 rats? Just being obstinate.

He is not afraid that is true... I was pronounced dead by the Livingston County coroner at 9 years old by drowning. Although I'd like to avoid a repeat of that if possible, it was a painless death the main concern after I was revived, being without oxygen to the brain for so long that there would be some sort of mental damage. Luckily... that's not the case, as you can all see how I turned out since!

He trapped all the rats out of the home grounds! unfortunately, the home marsh here is being drained down to its fall level of basically wet mud by November 25th opener. What was a decent water table all summer long is now leaving fast.

He runs 25 traps there and his wife runs 25 traps there for a total of 50 checks daily. His wife can probably out-trap and out-skin many guys here including me. I understand she does a lot of the fur handling for him, including 400+ coon from the fall season two years ago along with fox/coyotes last year, on top of all those rats. But he also traps many different locations outside of the big marsh complex there, and spends a couple months of north on the east side of Black Lake region. In other words, all those rats come from a lot of different places. But overall I'd say he is one of the best fur trappers in the nation and definitely one of the best under-ice, blind-set muskrat men alive today.

Just being obstinate. like nyredfox and proratman posted earlier... it's not all about the money. Actually, the man who paid $3,625 winning bid for the top unit this year said that same exact thing... the money isn't everything

what... the homeboys here aren't good enough to visit with about NYS trapping any more? Just for that, I am going to carpet-bomb Lakeshore Marshes unit on the 10/25 opener!!!

Would be a nice pile of finished fur for John to sort thru I said there might be 2,000 or more catch potential if everything falls into place. I don't know what exact populations to expect, nobody knows how favorable or fickle the weather will be, I don't know if my knees or achilles or shoulders or back will give way. Too early to tell any of that. But Ethan is just working with me on Montezuma specifically, and tagging along from time to time elsewhere. He's a young man with a hot girlfriend who likes to deer hunt, so I've been kicked to the back-burner as you might expect <lol>

How big would the pile be if it contained all 2000 put up rat pelts? More than would fit in the bed of a p/u? That is just way too many for my feeble little brain to comprehend. You would need to send them via freight to Canada. lol

kirk, 2000 put-up rats would easily fit in the back of a short-bed truck with much room to spare. Not a lot of volume there at all. Reducing them from on the hoof to that finished state in the truckbed is another matter entirely :>)
Like I said, there is at least one guy here in NY who has broken 2,000 rats in a season that I know of, and I've worked hard to accumulate enough area so those type of populations might be available. Not all of the pieces are in place yet, may never be but we'll see how it unfolds.

Austin, any chance I might tag along for a day or two at Monti? There's no way I could ever keep up that kind of pace for any length of time but it would be fun to try for a day or two.
