Got a few pipes out yesterday. Pretty good sign but in a few different places. Never write an old spot out. Places coon use one year may change from year to year. Crops change so routes to and from May change as well. Seems to be that most of my good spots remain the same. Coon are funny that way. Won't have a chance to check them until tomorrow night. Pre-baiting is almost as fun as trapping. Can't wait to check them.

I put a half a dozen coon boxes out last weekend. Lots of sign around water but in my area they will move to the standing corn soon so thats where I baited the boxes

Corn will be getting hard soon in my area. They like it when it's milky and soft and sweet. Gonna check them tonight and see. I have a sweet corn lot on the end of my swamp and half of it is knocked down and chewed. All the turds I found are purple and full of grapes.

I use PVC pipe. Pretty sure it's 11/2". I cut them to about 10" long. Wherever I find sign I shove a pipe in the ground and bait it with mini marshmallows and lure it. The pipes work the best because A coon is about the only animal that will reach down into the them other than a possum or skunk. I also cover the mallows with a wad of leaves so they have to work a little to get the bait out. If the bait and leaves are gone, it got hit. Pre baiting works great for coon because it gets them coming to the bait fairly regularly. Once the season opens, replace the pipe with a dog proof of choice and there you have it. By setting these out early, it will narrow down your sets so you can use your traps efficiently and wisely. In other words, "less guesswork.". Hope this explains things.

I am playing around with pre-baiting coons this year for the 1st time. I am thinking that these critters are going to eat me out of house and home. I have 5 coons coming in and eating around a pound to a pound and a half of dog food per night. It is great to look at the pictures and see what is there. I use a 4" drain pipe with caps on the ends and holes cut in the top. I keep it in place with a T bar stake. Works pretty slick.
