Hello everyone.I'm a new beginning trapper.I just took my course.I'm going to be trapping coyote and fox this season.I would like advice as far as type or traps preferred and size, wire or wood stretchers, and can I sell fur green at the auctions or do I have to flesh and stretch? Itis my first time doing so,I plan to do at least a few but until I get good can I sell green fur?.also I have a friend who traps coyote and he uses duke #2's and nightowl lures and slams them.but ive heard to stay away from duke and use mb 450's for coyote and fox? Just looking for advice.anything is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

MB550's, Bridger #2, MB450's(I love them for fox, little small for yote but will hold one and stand up to one)KB's (pricey but nice), wooden stretchers, yes you can sell green. And you must have nightowl lures. You'll get plenty of opinions on this but mine is the only one that counts......

I used duke 1.75 last yr, my first season. They took some some work to get how I wanted them. But they worked great for the price, after selling fur and traps I was able to upgrade to bridger # 2 dogless for this season !

My course instructor was talking about those bridger dogless #2's has anyone used them yet?I have not heard much about people using bridger.and as far as mb 550's go won't they be overkill for a fox? I figured my buddy slams coyotes and fox in duke #2's so thats why I thought mb 450's might be a good choice? I'm no pro but I have a few dollsrs to spend and want to start off with decent gear.

Buy the best you can afford right now. You can't go wrong with quality equipment. You'll be farther ahead with a few good traps than a bunch of inferior ones.

the mb550 if im not mistaken is a #2 size trap anyway, the mb 450's or 550s should be just fine, if you want a quality trap, there are numerous traps out there that are good quality, iv just not used any of them but the mb line, i also run victor's and dukes, but slowly upgrading to the mb line. like mentioned already your better off goin with quality then quantity to start with.
nightowl is definatly a good choice in my opinion but find what works for you in your area, if you have alot of trapping pressure around using nightowl it may not work as good as something else they havnt smelled before, in either case do some scouting and set on location cus no matter the brand of lure/bait your using its not gonna work if there aint fur there.

Ok thanks for the advice.I'm gonna start with a dozen or two of the mb 550's and some night owl lure.what is everyone using to clean and get rid of fleas and ticks off the hides?

Welcome. I was told to put the pelts in garbage bag and spray raid in it and seal and let sit for hour or so. It worked for me for the fleas, not sure about ticks? Hey have you or you friends looked into joining the NYSTA? If you read some of the past threads on here you will see how much they do for trapping here in NY.

Do you leave the raid on it or wash it off when you put it up? And I have not joined yet but loom firward to it.

I used raid last season it worked for fleas an ticks as long as you choose one that states it's for both ! I never sprayed fur directly I fogged the bag then dropped in pelt, sold green just add buyer aware of it unsure whatever he did before he put it up !

Yeah I did the same fogged the bag not directly on fur. I also sold green so I'm not sure if the buyer washed the fur because of the raid.

For doing mostly hay sets shoukd I dye my traps or no? Ive heard it dont matter and some say it does? Does it prolong the life of the trap? If so what brand/type of dye is best?

I used kbl trap dip, was happy with it if you don't have a lot of time to put into it ! If you have time I would go the old fashion way of boiling and using logwood dye.
