I live in NYC (hello there ) as some of you know, and unfortunately I have to drive or take public transportation to get to places where I can trap this season (Suffolk and Staten Island). I have no car/truck, no one can drive me and good luck finding a train/cab/bus that can get all the way to Suffolk County/SI in reasonable time with a few dead animals in your bag without getting cops on you. Been doing all this research for supplies and whatnot, when the biggest trapping tool of all is my own personal vehicle. Unless I can get a job AND a cheap car before November, I don't think I'm trapping this season. Kinda sad. Depressing for me when I think about it, as I've wanted to hunt/trap since I was 15. I don't come from an "outdoors-y" family, and I'm living with my mother (19yo female), so there's not much (enthusiastic) support there. ....And if you were curious, fur processing would be happening on the patio once we get the privacy screens bought and fitted. I would make it work with mom if I ever got a car/truck.

You really need to move Upstate to Northern New York, and get out of that Rat Race of Long Island and Metropolitan N.Y.
Plenty of Veterinary Clinics in Rural Areas of Upstate where you'd be a lot happier.
Sooner you make the Move, the More content you'll be.

And it'd pretty much be the last train/bus/cab ride you'd ever HAVE to take...

Haha, I'd move if I could but I can't. XD One of my goals is to own a nice piece of land upstate.

I left Staten Island 48 years ago. I used to trap those tidal marshes for muskrats and sadly a lot of them have been filled in. The day after I graduated high school I was on a bus headed north. Best thing I ever did. I live in the Adirondacks and have all of the trapping, fishing, and hunting I could ever want. I don't know how old you are, but I would definately suggest a good education. My best advice is that you only have one life. Don't waste it!

Can you get a couple cage traps and get creative ? Catching a couple coon by the dumpster behind a restaurant is trapping and it could benefit the neighborhood.

Painted, your story inspired me greatly...I'm pretty young, only 19, but I still don't know what I want to do in life. I'm thinking of learning programming to at least give me skills that are desired until I can figure out what career I want. (I no longer want to be a veterinarian as of right now, which contradicts my username!) But once I get the money saved up, I'm moving where I can fulfil my dreams of what I want to do every chill season...
Keith, there are at least half a dozen coons in my neighborhood, and at least one family of grinners, but there are also A LOT of people and few hiding spots to do certain things, such as dispatching the animals. If I do trap in my neighborhood, it would have to be on my own patio/backyard parking lot, and even that has it's challenges. I also only have one cage trap that I use for cats. I would prefer DPs with at least a pull trigger, however.
Still, I'm going to at least do research this season: After discovering the coons close to home (I heard stories, but only saw them myself a few weeks ago), I might make a few lures/baits and try and see what shows up. If I can train them to a certain area, trapping them would be easy (easier, anyway)!

Well, every trapper seems to think everyone else has it better...more fur, better weather, better land access, etc.
We finally found someone who has it worse! LOL
Good luck with that......please post some pics of people looking at you on the subway with your traps and catches.....

a good friend of mine near me catches a lot more coyotes than I do. He attributes that to a secret lure, one I believe is referred to as "gray sauce" I'm not privy to all the ingredients, but I do know its base is a mixture of stale beer and chewing tobacco. Says he just saves up all the leftover beer from conventions, fur shed gatherings, private b.s. sessions and "shoe parties". I kinda think the favored brand comes in blue cans, but not exactly sure. One has to wonder if all the leftover beer gets used as such, or excess is poured out on the ground instead. Anyways, I cannot reveal too much, but that's the gist of what I've been told. Leftover beer is the key

XD I would need a little wagon or cart of some sort to hold my catches, though (while they are in a bag of some sort). Those things can get heavy! The coons I've seen in my neighborhood are at least 15-20 pounds each, and in other places that can get larger! Would love to move where Austin is! Lol! Always wanted to be able to catch coyotes.

I'll make a deal with you vet... only because I'm ultra generous as a fellow trapper You can c'mon up here any time and help yourself to ALL of the coyotes on my line. Don't tell anyone else about this special offer... I don't want to be flooded with requests from other trappers anxious to nab these coyotes here next season!

Since you posted it on the forums, don't be surprised when you get a dozen knocks on your door this season. Though once I get my truck I am going to be searching for places to trap other than down here, so I appreciate the offer. Then I can learn all your secrets, mwahaha!

Hey Austin,
Since when is there ever any left over beer? I happen to have the same friend; believe he lives in someplace called Gorham or Stanley. I heard that secret lure has Seneca Lake perch and Flatiron apples as some of the main ingrediants.

Where in NYC are you located Vet? I have been trapping the Queens area for nuisance coons. Last job yielded 8 coon 3 this year young and 5-20 + # adults. Only one of those looked health, the rest (even young had bald patches and grimy fur. The best looking coons I picked up out that way so far where from the Howard Beach area. problem with them is they were loaded with ticks. I travel daily out to Queens for nuisance jobs. I live in Suffolk myself. If your interested I can use a trapping partner this season. I can put you on some coon ,rats and foxes. Transportation can be worked out. PM me if your interested.

I heard that secret lure has Seneca Lake perch and Flatiron apples as some of the main ingrediants. I think the leftover beer gets mixed up with leftover bacon, but not 100% sure Austin, You have a friend that has left over beer and left over bacon. This must be one of those urban myths, from the metropolis of Stanley. If not, this poor, sick, twisted fellow should be directed to seek immediate professional mental health help, no matter how well this "gray sauce" lures yotes. Vet, When I was still working commercial construction, I often worked in Rochester, and Buffalo. I found it easier than I suspected to get permission to trap in the city limits, and I did very well at catching good numbers of coon in box traps. Coon make a good living in the dumpsters and trash cans that abound in these urban areas, and can be easy to get into a cage trap. I found that restaurants, housing complexes, factories with cafeterias, and even the job sites were often overrun with menace coons, and the owners have to spend a fortune to pay someone to come in and trap them out. If you can find these places that are being visited regularly by coon, chances are, the property owners want them gone. Ask permission, and learn to conceal and secure your trap from would be trap thieves, and you could do quite well in the NYC. As for dispatch of targeted animals, it can and should be done quickly, cleanly, quietly and humanely. One box trap set in the right place, can produce enough fur to finance a second fairly quickly. Then two, can become four, four can become 100. You may need to get creative, but it can be done.
