Just dye and wax them. Some of the dye will take. The dye is basically cosmetic, so you can skip that if wanted... I just like a black trap...

If they've been outside for 50 days and are still shiney I'd be wondering if I got all of the factory oil off them. Mine only hung for a week and they don't shine. Try spraying them with a salt water solution, they should rust up in a couple days. I don't dye land traps. Wax and bed.

Degrease and wax
after a couple seasons, they'll take dye well
can't see a shiny trap if it's covered with dirt

new traps best thing to do is run in dishwasher with cascade hang out side for a couple of weeks & they will rust up some to take the dye. if they are going in the ground as a canine trap dish washer then right into the wax as stated above the animals dont care if they are black or silver under the ground & in a year from now they will take the dyes .

Member of New Hampshire Trappers Association. The traps on the right are new and been dyed and waxed this year and the others were last years after cleaning, dying and waxing the second year. Amazing how they took the dye after using for a season.

I degreased, rusted up and naturally dyed in 2days. Boil in baking soda for 4 to 6 hrs. Then give them a vinegar bath for 1 to 3 mins. Leave outside for the night and should have a nice rust coating on them by morning. Then just dye whatever color you feel.

I read that hardwood ashes in your water will clean them its the lye in the ashes that does it.it says equal parts water and ashes and boil for about an hour I haven't tried it yet but I am going to when I get my new traps.

vinegar bath for 24 to 48 hours, then rinse and hang outside, removes all grease and when you hang to dry forms a even surface coat of rust
