Can anyone explain to me the proper/right way to remove the cartilage from the ears of k-9's and coon? Do you slit the ear skin then remove the cartilage or just loosen the skin around the ear with a screwdriver or similar tool then pop the cartilage out?

Here's a bit more info from one of the other sites for coyotes/fox: T-Man on ear cartilage removal with Phil Brown vidI"ve never slit the skin until the fur is separated from the cartilage. Using an old teaspoon to loosen the fur from the cartilage can take some time. Same thing can be done with an exacto blade. Using the screwdriver method is quick but I find it hard to get all the outer ear fur to stay with the pelt because that fur is very thin and tears easily. Like many things, it's a skill learned through experience and making mistakes. Good luck.

There is a video on YouTube by 5911 Ryan where he does the ears . I think the title is boarding a coyote . He starts the side of the ears and then pulls the cartilage out with plyers . Hope this helps.

Great video, erict. Maybe I'll get to put that info to use. He says the ears aren't used (I assume meaning for garments). If that's the case, why not just cut them off?

can also use an ear splitter (avail at any taxidermy supply) which is nothing more than pliers that open instead of close when you squeee the handles, however i never bother with splitting ears on furs for auction sales (only if they are to be taxidermy'd) otherwise i just pin the ears flat when drying and it helps with the furs stacking more efficiently come auction time
