What is the danger of this plant? I assume it is invasive.

They won't come out to kill it, at least not around here. "Too prevalent," I've been told. Look at "infestation" locations, by County, on their map. Where I live, it's pretty much a solid colored block. I've had problems with it, now when I know I'm going to be around it I take preventative measures.
Bottom line is this: There are three elements that must be present in order for the damage to be done. 1) The juice (wet) from the plant (even the "honeydew" beads that can sometimes ooze from the undersides of the leaves), 2) Your skin, and 3) Light. Wash immediately, literally flush with water (and soap if you just happen to have brought it with you), LOTS of water. If you can't do that, immediately hide the affected area from ALL light sources, particularly sunlight (even on cloudy/overcast days, it doesn't matter - ANY light). Dried, and it presents no problem. In fact, the seeds from the plant are sold and used as a spice in certain Asian/Indian cuisine! What a pain in the butt plant it is...
If it gets in your eyes, you're going to be blinded. Permanently. No maybe's about it, wear proper eye protection for the little while you'll be around the stuff or else you WILL be wearing dark glasses the rest of your life.
It's bad news. Really bad stuff. And it's absolutely serious, no joke about it at all. The first time it got me, I didn't even know what it was, and had never heard of Giant Hogweed. But that doesn't mean that I don't have the scars on my left forearm. I was incredibly fortunate that I didn't wipe the sweat from my face or brow with my forearm that day. From now on, it's long-sleeved shirts, heavy pants, leather gloves, athletic supporter (okay, just kidding about that one), and vented goggles. And that's at a minimum. I don't have a tractor with a cab, yet, so when I bush hog the "infested" fields I do it the first time no later than the beginning of June when the plants are just emerging and are relatively small, and as many times as necessary while the regrowth is still relatively small. I don't need the spray from the plants' juice getting on me. NEVER use a weedeater!!! If the juice gets on your clothing, DON'T TOUCH IT, OR LET ANY SKIN THAT GETS WET FROM IT SEEPING THROUGH THE CLOTHING TO BE EXPOSED TO LIGHT!!! Let it dry thoroughly! Remember, it needs those three elements all at the same time for it to cause the damage. Except the eyes; you're SOL if that happens.

spray with roundup-type weed killer from a safe distance for individual plants and small plots. trying to deal with large growth stands is hazardous business as tmc notes. This is one plant to immediately recognize and avoid all contact with otherwise

round-up won't kill giant hog weed. around here the state sprays it and does a half way decent job of knocking it down enough so it doesn't go to seed, but they have a heck of a time trying to kill it.
