Was looking at these new piranta havalon knives. Does anyone know how well they work? or good they do? What kind of life do you get out of a blade? and how hard are the blades to find? Do they make a good skinning knife?? Wayne

I got one as gift towards the end of this past trapping season.. I gutted a few deer with it, skinned a few coyotes, fox and coon. Here is my take. It is a surgical scalpel. It is scary sharp which means you need to be an experienced skinner or you will make lots of holes in your pelts. If you put any side pressure on the blade it will snap. To be honest I found this to be a little scary, I was field dressing a big Iowa buck and the blade snapped off up inside the chest cavity......not good. It is better suited to doing detail work like taxidermy skinning. I like my hook blade knife for opening cuts on coon or a blue handle Chicago cutlery for canines, then a serrated Victorinox for ringing feet and working around the head. The serrated knife allows for a longer lasting edge when working around bone and cartilidge. The havalon blade's edge will not hold up to use against bone. The blades are simple to replace however. I think I will stick with my hook knife, serrated Victorinox, and Chicago cutlery resharpeneds, Green River for the beavers. I have used the 3 knife system while skinning for years and maybe it's just what I'm comfortable with, it keeps your knifes individually sharper longer and a quick hit with the steel and the edge is back. Using a skinning winch set up saves your knife edge most of all

I used the Havalon this past season and thought it was great. Super sharp and lasted through three or four coons. The blade is simple to change. I did not have any issues with the blade coming off, but I used it only for skinning furbearer, no deer. Just gotta be careful or it will slice up the pelts, but so will any blade I suppose.
