"After the Blizzard of Copper-Plated # 5's Flew,
Down Fell the Gobbler; RED, WHITE, and BLUE" ;D ;D ;D
At 5:00 AM, I hit a blast of My Air-horn to shake up the Entire Cedar Ridge where the Groups of Hens, Jakes, and Gobblers have been spotted every morning and night for the last week.
Early as it was, four groups of birds all shock gobbled all along Ridge and gave walleyed and The Beaver Princess a pretty good idea of where to set up.
A played out alfalfa field that had just been spread with lots of Manure was attracting several groups of birds numbering about 25 in total which had been seen picking and strutting in the field as recently as Last night.
walleyed had constructed a crude blind out of dead fallen limbs under an old Wolf Black Cherry tree at the edge of the field last night along the birds travel route.
We wormed our way back into the Buck-thorn and Prickly Ash and set up Our position for the Ambush.
Without any further encouragement, the various gobblers continued to sound off, and the woods began to wake up and a cacophony of Bird sounds filled the Morning stillness.
At around 5:30AM, walleyed issued forth a series of Tree yelps on the PRIMOS POWER CRYSTAL SLATE CALL followed by a series of excited CUTS, and the roosting Gobblers went wild at four separate locations.
The Birds began to fly down at somewhere around 5:45 AM and at 5:50AM or so Walleyed let rip with a prolonged, excited FLY DOWN CACKLE, which cranked up the now grounded Gobblers even more.
We were on a Short Opening Day Time schedule as walleyed had an appointment with a 6 inch Pain block needle at 9:30AM in Syracuse.
By 6:10 AM, it was apparent that two groups of birds coming from the south were definitely headed our way and I went over the Last Minute proper preparations with the Beaver Princess on how to hold the shotgun bracing it against her Thigh, how to point her left shoulder towards the approaching birds, and when to mount the Gun, and her proper aim point at the Base of the Gobblers neck.
At 6:15Am Preceding a Startling chorus of thunderous gobbles In all their Spring Time Glory, a Stately procession of FIVE Jakes emerged from the wood-line at 80 yards and made a beeline toward walleyed and the Princess.
Seizing the Lynches Foolproof Box call which lay close at hand, walleyed layed down a series of soft clucks, whines, and purrs from inside of his muffled camouflage Jacket and The Jakes stopped, stretched out their red necks and heads, and gobbled in unison.
Glancing at the princess, I noticed a wavering, moving gun barrel as she struggled to keep the gun mounted to her shoulder as the strain, stress and excitement were getting to her.
Right then walleyed hear an alarm PUTT, and the birds suddenly reversed course and began to highstep back the way they had come.
That is till walleyed let rip with a series of cackles which turned two of the birds on a dime and they quickly closed the distance.
The princess at that moment hissed: "when should I shoot" ?
wait, Not yet, their at 55 yards, wait...........50 yards, wait let them get a bit closer, wait...........45 yards.....
with walleyed's xtra-full choke, it was time to bust a cap on one of these gobblers.
"which one should I shoot" hissed the princess. "Which ever one you can hit", returned walleyed.
Time stood still
Tick tock tick tock tick tock...................
"Shoot that bird", walleyed whispered.
No shot ?........................"Shoot 'Em" I repeated a Little Louder.
"SHOOT THAT BIRD NOW !!!!! Walleyed fairly yelled !!!!
BANG !!! Roared the MOSS-BURG 835 ULTI-MAG 12GA. "Guides Gun" in 3 1/2" Magnum
Jake Gobbler Down !!!
"Get to the bird, and chamber another round". walleyed yelled
The princess went through rather than around the wall of the blind.
She short-stroked the Moss-burg and jammed the next shell.
"What do I do", she said "He's getting away" !!!
Put a boot on him and hold him down. (the bird was just flopping & doing the Rocky-Bob).
The Beaver Princess starting Squealing with Excitement:
"WOO, HOO" !!! "I GOT MY FIRST TURKEY"
All was well with the World
In Woodville, N.Y. This Morning at Dawn. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
