Good Morning, if someone could answer this I would appreciate it. Ice fishing, you just caught a nice fish in a derby, its cold out. You take fish to be measured for prize, fish is alive and released later apparently in good health. The Question; Could this fish be blind. ? Could its eyes have frozen enough to cause permanent damage. Thank you Ed

ED Good question and I will say right now I don't know. That being said I would think damage to the gills would be more severe than eyes. I know I have caught fish in my ponds and relaesed them in what seems great condition only to find them floating dead two days later.

From what I have read yes, if the cornea is damaged enough from the freezing. More of a concern is the membrane on the gills which they claim can begin to freeze within 10 seconds out of the water.

They have contests. and most all the fish are returned to the water. they may be alive but I think a lot of them could be blind.

I would think the trauma & stress would be a big factor....
