psb lectured me long ago about saying too much in these public message boards and I listened well, so we'll leave details out. Bottom line I have dual plans for this season depending on muskrats available or not. Oct 25th to firearms deer = all day mixed canine & coon lines. Hunt deer until rats open, then work whatever is available until that runs out. Maybe days' worth, maybe weeks' worth. If the rat trapping runs out, back to the canine line full bore. Either way is fine with me... ideally I can catch some of everything, but I'm going all-out on whatever is there to be caught. So we'll see how the rat trapping falls into place by November... too many variables to worry about. Prep for everything, and chase what's out there

I prestaked a few areas last year only to find on opening day someone was already there and gone, but I knew who it was because they left a few stakes of there own.

Nothing wrong with prestaking set locations for rats... I've done it on private permissions before when I plan on working thru the ice later. But what's the purpose of prestaking public ground or places where several trappers have access to? If someone thinks it is some sort of gentlemen's agreement to claimed spots, they need to read our regulations more carefully. When I see stakes in the water with no traps attached from 7am opening day onward, those stakes have zero meaning to them. I don't know what goes on in other parts of the state, but here in wny I have never once seen preseason muskrat trapping efforts anywhere. Unless it happened out of sight in some private area, nobody would get away with that on public or visible waters. I cannot think of a more visible, more obvious mode than muskrat trapping. There are plenty of trappers around here who self-police such things that it would never happen on the state waters. If we have a good muskrat crop this year, it's going to be heavily pursued by trappers coming out of woodworks. A lot of guys wanted to trap rats last year but didn't because there weren't any around. But those same guys (and more) will be ready to go again. So comp will be much heavier when muskrat houses pop up everywhere. In my case I'd be perfectly content to work canines all season long. To be honest, if I'm trapping rats this year past firearms deer season one part of me will feel guilty about not working canines full-bore to see just how many I could wind up with. Matter of fact I expect to mix in canine traps wherever I trap rats and that's part of my decision process for where to go. As for not posting detailed locations and information in public, that's something Phil chided me for long ago and rightly so. Some other well-respected trappers said the same, and I listened to good advice. If nobody posted anything and we all lurked, there wouldn't be any message board traffic at all. I think it's great to discuss tactics and general trapping information, details on set construction or equipment, etc. But to say I'm going here and doing this or that is obviously not a good idea. Other than that, I will say I've been trying to get fox permissions near Stanely NY with no luck so far. Everyone I ask says some gimpy ex-rugby player has that area all tied up for years now with a serious smack-down on fox & coyotes each fall. Guess I have to look elsewhere, unless he nixes the fox trapping this year while too busy polishing up all those field-trial trophies and ribbons he's been collecting

I agree Austin. I do not see pre-season trapping here.
