Dear Friends, Was out in the yard with the grandson watching a flock of 15 turkey vultures floating around over head. For some reason they seemed to be flying pretty low. we were heading inside for a drink we watched as these birds swooped down and caught a woodchuck up across the street at the bottom of the High School hill (about 75 yards) from my front door. What a racket they made. In a matter of a couple minutes it was all over and there was no trace of the woodchuck. One afternoon last week I counted 45 of these ugly creatures soaring over the neighborhood. Seems like every year there's more of them. Regards

They are about the only thing I can count on to clean up coyote carcasses even the grinners eat around them if there is anything else.

One nasty ugly bird up close. Saw 5 of them pulling apart a dead fawn that was hit by a car. Went to town and came back and just about everything was gone.

This reminds me of some things from a few winters ago .when i was at a fur auction in NJ at Space farms .Was standing out side talking to a few trappers and farmers.was asking then about all the Turkey buzzards at the farm and in the area. They told me they where not turkey buzzards. I forget the name they call them? Much bigger and very agressive they started coming up from the south, more every year. They say they have to watch there livestock.mainly at birth time.Mostly Sheep and goats.they follow the mothers around the fields waiting for them to drop there young.they know when they are close to given birth. When they drop they attack ,cord still connected to mother.they give out permits 50 birds on a permt and ithink you can keep getting pemits. They started to apear a few years ago. wonder if any in NY yet? Forgot there name .Big ugly bird.LOL

The turkey vulture is one of the only birds in North America with a highly developed sense of smell. It relies both on its keen eyesight and powerful nose to search out food.
I also read that there are many ongoing studies on this bird regarding its ability to digest the rotten food that it eats. It is odd to me, however, that they don't like to eat my dead possums!
And I do agree...they are one ugly bird!
