I know Basspro carries a couple traditional-style DIY kits. They've got a store in Auburn, if you're not familiar. (..or you can buy online)
I've got a .50 cal. kit gun that my father passed to me, which he built about 15 years ago. Works like a charm.

I've got a CVA caplock .50 pistol and rifle (1:66" twist, my favorite!). Built them from kits in 1979. Still my go-to for black powder. So far with that rifle, all one-shot kills.

chico - The Buffalo Gun Center carries a good selection of Black Powder shooting supplies and they're not too far from you. You could try calling them at 716-833-2581 before makng the drive. Cabelas in Wheeling West Virginia shouldn't be more than a couple hours away either. Bass Pro in Auburn would probably be a longer drive.

If your looking for real black powder you'll have to buy it online or go in with a group and split the cost. I have not found a place local to buy it. If your going to use a substitute then that will be available but it does not ignite as good as the real deal.
