Hey all, I received a call from a landowner today who needs muskrats removed off his property on a lake, I don't have a nuisance license, just my NYS trapping license. Do I need to contact the DEC to get a permit to trap these rats (since the season is closed in the southern zone) or is it not possible to do it until next fall? Thanks guys.

Furs cannot be kept either if taken under a nuisance permit. That is specific to each permit. 3 years ago I received a permit to trap beaver out of season and was allowed to keep fur until May 18th

You used to need to apply for a permit to remove Muskrats, the law was recently changed to this :
Raccoons, muskrats, coyotes or fox injuring private property may be taken by the owner, occupant or lessee thereof, or an employee or family member of such owner, occupant or lessee, at any time in any manner. (So no more permit is required for them, but they must be doing property damage).
Out of the legal season, the Muskrat carcasses must be buried, or cremated and the pelts may not be utilized or transported. With Beaver, out of season the land owner must apply for a permit, and can designate you as an agent to remove them. If you are a licensed trapper, you can request that you be able to utilize the pelts that are taken up to 30 days after the close of the season. Many times the restrictions and directions on a Beaver kill permit will be up to the Biologist in the region that issues it, and will vary greatly as to what is allowed. Hope this helps.
