Leaving work yesterday, driving home through my office park and the venerable, hallowed muskrat grounds of East Syracuse, I saw the Last Dodo Bird.
There, in a ditch along Towpath Road, my peripheral vision sees movement in the water, the V-wave formation of a swimming critter.
Mallard? Black Duck?
Nope......a muskrat!
There's one left? Or, a migrant?
As O'Gorman would say, probably pegged, blind, wearing a snare.
Locals called him Lobo.
I feel privileged to have witnessed this rare siting in that area......
Now, if we can get another of the opposite sex, perhaps the cycle could all start again.....
You guys missed one!

Route #81 and whack that sucker with a stick. ;D ;D
You said it was threatening songbirds, Right ? ;D ;D
Might be my LAST CHANCE to reduce one to my possession for the year.

From Waterloo to Syracuse, rat numbers look solid as any other normal year was. West of Waterloo all the way to Wyoming county or further it was deserted this year. I can tell you that after taking my traps and gear on a 500-mile round trip to points far north of here and back today, rat houses north / northeast of Fat Nancy's are equally scarce. But it wouldn't matter anyway because ice is still so thick beneath the settled snowpack, they are riding snowmachines and quads on the Indian River and Black Lake. Looks like spring season for me will begin sometime in March 2014

There is plenty of open water up north, just got back from setting over a hundred traps up there.

"north" is a relative term... I was north and east of Watertown. Open water ended north of Sandy Creeks
