Anyone know if a rat will attack and bit a dead rat Ina trap? I had one today that was roughed up a bit. Nothing was eaten so I don't think it was a mink or fox. It appeared to happen after the rat was caught cause his fur was disturbed when I found him. It was not badly damaged maybe only three or four bites but they went through saddle. Thanks....

This is common in spring rats, they are mating now. You will find this in beaver also as the yearlings are ejected some will be bitten up badly.

Fact of the matter is, at this time of year it is hard to find a male rat that is perfect.

Well, there's a video of a buck goring another buck that the hunters had just field dressed and had back at camp. The buck - the living one, obviously but you never know who's reading these - didn't care that humans were there, and they were about to shoot it because it was ruining the trophy buck they'd shot.
My guess is - was it a male rat? - that another male smelled the caught male and it didn't matter whether it was alive or dead, the attack response was triggered and it got its licks in and felt like it had won.

Yes. Dead or alive, they will bite. But it could have been attacked as it was in the "throws of death". Price should not be affected with the demand for rats being so high.

yes rats will bite other rats that are dead or alive if they are in there way same as beaver, its nature turkeys will attack the dead mature bird also. the price will be down graded depending on size & amount of bites, that is why some people dont trap spring rats, here in the northern zone where we still have ice on most of the lakes & marshes the rats are not bitten up yet, and with the snow adding up again it will be lucky if we get a week of what we call the spring run where you catch a lot of rats running around crazily chasing to mate.
