Regarding the Governor's proposal for the reduction of sporting licenses it is NYSTA's position that we are strongly opposed to the elimination of trapping licenses which would be relagated to a check off box on a hunting license. We strongly want to retain a seperate trapping license and are most suspicous what could happen down the road if this is allowed to happen. Also we are opposed to the reduction of cost from over $ 300 for a non resident trapping license to $ 100. We feel this would create too many headaches and issues such as falsified furbearer reporting. Please contact your Assemblyman and Senator to correct these matters in the Governor's proposed budget.Thank you.
Also don't forget to send in your comments regarding the revised bobcat plan. The antis certainly will!

The press has been advertising the Bobcat plan a lot. Just a thought, there is a million voters in Queens ; Guess how many trappers there are in Queens.

I worked down there quite a few years ago and at that time there was a fair number of muskrat trappers but I am not shure anymore. If there are not any trappers now there has to be a ton of rats in the tidal marshes.

If there is no trapping license, only a check off box on a hunting license could that be a back door means of eliminating trapping in this state??? I don't trust our Governor or legislature!!!

I know the bobcat comment site was posted on this site earlier but that link took me no where. So I went to DEC web site and could not find a link there for comment, so I just sent them an email and got a return email that made no sense to me. So I don't know if my comment was recorded or not.
Agree on trapping license, I think we need to keep a separate identity and out of state should be higher just like it is if you want to go out of state.

I do not believe that doing away with trapping in Ny could work to their advantage in the long run but they might be tempted to try it I don't trust our current leadership either. The good news is I come from a large family who are all hunters and trappers and we had a get together and all agreed not to vote for anyone regardless of party affiliation next time who has voted in favor of these changes. Our family has a long history of outdoorsmen Going back to My great great Grandfather John Cheney who was one of the pioneering explorers of the Adirondacks and one of the very first guides in that region.

Mole I agree with your thinking to an extent but I have also noticed that Schenactady and Albany counties have had issues with that solution just last season and rabid animals were eventually cornered and shot but only after someone had been bitten because local animal control officers were unsucessful. We have the same problem here we have an animal control officer but he couldn't catch a starving mouse in a cage but draw his salery regularly and even occasionally responds to a complaibt.

To be honest that goes right along with my thinking. NYS mixes politics with Science, Conservation, etc. The politicians nephew gets the animal control job. DEC has done this in the past. The call in I got a Cyote.

I can see why the NYSCC would not,but why would CFAB or the FWMB not contact the NYSTA to see what our input would be before doing away with the tapping license?

Herm, I think (hope) that we (NYSTA) have rectified that situation of lack of communication and made great strides towards obtaining a stand alone trapping license with appropriate fees for both residents and non residents. I can fill you in with more details at Von's on Saturday if you stop in. Either Dave Miller or myself will inform all on here of any and all changes if and when accepted by the Governor in his Budget. In the meantime, we are keeping the pressure on where it needs to be applied. You folks can help by making sure your Representatives in Albany know that trappers want to pay their own way, want to maintain their identity as trappers - not lumped with hunters, and do not believe in a "free" license for residents nor non residents - we wish to financially support conservation efforts in NY. Thank you !

As the Chairman of the NYSCC Fur Resources Committee, as well as a member of the FWMB, I can assure you that there is good communication between these groups and the NYSTA; on this issue as well as many others trappers' and other sportsmen/women are dealing with.
Shortly before the license fee proposal came out, I was contacted by members of CFAB to let me know of the idea of no license fee. I was also asked to comment on the proposal as part of the Governor’s press release by the DEC Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources Director. I told her I really needed get feedback from others before I could do so. After attending a public meeting on the Proposal at the Fairgrounds in Syracuse, discussing the issue with other trappers, members of CFAB, and John Rockwood of the NYSTA, we all agreed a “no cost” trapping license might “cost” us more in the long run. All the conversations were very enlightening and there was a good sharing of information and reasoning for our views.
The point I’d like to make, as I read some of these posts, is that there is by far better communication between the aforementioned Boards and organizations than perhaps some realize. I am sure people like John Rockwood and Dave Miller would agree there has always been a direct line of communication on issues involving trapping, whether it’s from the FWMB or the NYSCC Fur Resources Committee, and I’d expect that to continue…Jim Petreszyn

I would strongly disagree with your last comment, "there has always been a direct line of communication on issues involving trapping". As a former member of the NYSCC Fur Resources Committee years ago that was far from the case. At that time it was most disorganized and dysfunctional. Also in the past the council has failed to consult NYSTA before taking a position on trapping issues. I hope that all of that has changed Jim since you have taken over as Chairman of the Committee. As Sportsmen we truly need to communicate with each other and stand united.

Sorry Al, you are correct...I should have said since I've been a part of these Boards and organizations...You know I do not shy away from contacting the NYSTA and/or Dave Miller on trapping related issues...It just seems to work better that way...I completely agree about standing united...It's likely the only way we (trappers) will continue our traditional ways....Jim

What ever happened to "if it ain't broke don't fix it".The majority of trappers I have talked to were happy with things the way they were and did not mind paying their way and most were proud of their identity as trappers.I would think that building the economy and getting more of our upstate citizens above poverty level would be much more important to the governor as raising the standard of living up here would also benefit the entire state financially.

You are absolutely correct that trappers were perfectly happy to pay their own way and maintain their own identity! Like you said, "if it ain't broke don't fix it"!

I have life sportsman, bow, and muzzleloader so I don't know about life trapping but I was told years ago by a local ECO that the card is NOT a valid license and I still needed to carry the "license panel" of the tags we are mailed that is the same as everyone else. He said the "card" is just a novelty.
Has anyone else been told this?
