Any containerl with a lid. Layer of salt/ layer of fish until container is full or ya run out of fish. Keep in a cool place until needed.

Yes out of direct sun. The fish will cure in the salt and make a brine as they do. No slimy mess as long as you layer fish in salt. I use water softener salt because its only 5-6 bucks a 50 lb. bag. Some places will sell ya broken bags at a slight discount. Also the softener salt will last several years so its not just a one time shot. I keep fish from year to year with no problem.

ive got a farm pond loaded with grass carp, literally hundreds (possibly thousands) of palm sized ones (in addition to about a dozen 15-20 pound breeders), question is: is it best to use them salted as described above or freeze and use unsalted? i had planned on filling the freezer with a large amount for next season (ive got numerous freezers so space isnt an issue) or does it matter either way?

Heres why I salt fish. They cure so they will not spoil in warm weather. They also don't freeze in normal weather conditions so they keep working at the set longer.I use the water softener salt because its cheap and you get several uses from a bag.Ive never used whole fish like the small carp so I don't know well it would work but as mentioned above spoiling might be an issue if used in warmer weather.

gotta say you make a good selling point with the fact that they wont freeze in cold weather!!!
