So does this mean if I am trapping in a area that allows this "expanded" bobcat zone, And I catch one in a coyote set, I cannot keep it unless I have a special "bobcat permit"?

Seems funny they have public comment on Bobcats but no public comment on guns.

That would be the way I read it. And you would need to have the pelt sealed and submit a lower jaw bone and/or tooth. Permit is free.

my input was this: any open bobcat season must run equal to land seasons for all other species (fox, coon, coyote) with no special permits or fees involved. tagging and/or tissue samples requirements are fine.
If anything, an abbreviated bobcat season should open AFTER firearms season for deer and run to Feb 15th. Bobcats are a species which reaches peak fur quality aka "primeness" in late winter, as opposed to canines and raccoon. A propsed season that opens late October and closes early December is a step backwards in all regards... similar to the existing fiasco with fisher seasons in our northern zone already.

Thank you for posting this Wayne.
Austin, this proposal needs our support to be passed this year. I do not disagree with most of what you have said but there very good reasons that this proposal is designed as it is. However, we need to support passage of this proposal in order to open the door for additional opportunities for trappers. Once this door is opened, we have opportunity to work with the FMT to make appropriate changes in the future.
This proposal was designed to be implemented a year ago. Overwhelming opposition by preservationists prevented that from happening. PLEASE take the time to respond to the comment period via the links and information Wayne provided above. Let's not lose this opportunity again !
Thank you !

I'll refrain from any further discussion on what all I may disagree with, it doesn't need to be in print here. Hopefully we have an opportunity to manage bobcat and fisher in similar regard to other NYS furbearers with regard to availability of populations and fur quality considerations.

Dear Mr. Austinp, While, I agree that some of your comments certainly have merit, more important is the task of getting the plan passed and implemented. Once implemented it can, then, be expanded and enhanced. Regards

Sometimes these comments come in from all over the nation by form letters generated on the websites of the hsus and similar groups. They blast their registered users with a form they can fill out and email with a few clicks. I did quite a bit of work learning about how they do this to block dove hunting in a number of states. I would raise the issue of website-generated form letters. A talking point is that their membership is so loyal that most, if not all members, will press enter and send these convenient form letters without any research or prior knowledge of an issue.

My letter of support:
To Whom It May Concern, Please consider this e-mail Correspondence as a comment of Support for the NYS DEC Bureau of Wildlife's Draft Proposal for the adjustment and expansion of the Trapping and Hunting Seasons for Bobcat in both the Northern and Southern Zones. Any proposal submitted by the DEC Bureau of wildlife which expands the Recreational Hunting and Trapping opportunities and utilizes through conservative wise-use, the State's Surplus Bobcat Populations is a commendable goal which should have the support of all Conservation Minded Sporstmen and Citizens throughout the state. As a New York State Resident Citizen Taxpayer As well as a Life-Long Trapper, Hunter, Nature Observer, and Conservationist, I whole-heartedly applaud the DEC Bureau of Wildlife's Scientifically Data Based, Common Sense Approach in crafting a Conservative, Sustainable, Wise Use of a Portion of Our State-Wide Bobcat Surplus Population Production. Using a Conservative, Scientific Data- Based Policy Approach to Managing Our State's Wildlife Resource Populations rather than relying upon an Emotionally OR Politically Based Policy with dis-regard for Scientific fact is always the Most Judicious and Prudent Course of Action. Please Take My comments into Consideration when formulating the Final Policy and do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of Further assistance. Robert F. Jordan 6621 NYS Route # 3 Henderson, N.Y. 13650 (315) 938-5577

Other clubs may want to do this also.
Our local club (61 members) voted on a resolution to support the bobcat plan. The resolution to support the plan on behalf of 61 members is now being forwarded to Bryan Swift DEC

austin you do have some vaild points but seem to miss the bigger picture that with out this there will be no cat trapping in some of these areas, so sitting on thee side lines and saying nothin is counter productive in my opinion. any chance we get to open more oppertunities for people to harvest new critters should be supported because you can dam sure count on the antis to be pushing to shut this down
