They were warned well over a week ago this was going to happen. How is Mr. Miller approaching this? Does any one know?

Dave and I met briefly with Gordon Batcheller on Friday in regard to the Governor's proposal for license changes as provided for in his proposed budget. We are quite uncomfortable with this to say the least and it appears that many others are as well. We are going to need some more time to digest this and plan our response, but we have little time to do so. Dave and I will be in Albany next week. We will try to gather more information and will be discussing this issue with other sportsmen's groups. Action will be taken but we have been informed it may be futile under this governor's leadership as his plan is to ram this budget, along with the license proposals, right down our throats just as he did the SAFE act. Remember these things always, and especially during future elections !

From what I have been able to find out from my source is this recommendation as a whole came to the governor from CFAB.However the exact part of combining the hunting and trapping into one might of been recommended by CFAB or it might not have been part of it, my source could not say for sure.

Perhaps a compromise would be to call the new, combined license a Hunting AND trapping license?

The problem with that is losing count of the actual number of licensed trappers which is what I fear the is one of the goals. Without that we lose our voice.

Does this mean that anybody that holds a valid hunting license is allowed to trap,or will there still be a mandatory trapping course that has to be taken before trapping is allowed?

Thanks Doug I kind of thought it would be. This whole thing is very unsettling, not really sure what their real agenda is? I have a hard time believing it's in our best interest though.like I said before hopefully were just gun shy....literally

"License to steal" That is what the non-trappers will have when they purchase this license. A deer hunter who steals fur can now legally possess it if he is checked by a Conservation officer.

Commissioner of DEC Mr. Martens served Governor Mario Cuomo as Deputy Secretary for Energy and the Environment from 1992-94 and as Assistant Secretary from 1990-92.

John Rockwood and I visited briefly with Gordon Batchelor on Friday and we will both be in Albany on Feb. 27 and 28 meeting with other sportsmen's organizations. Be assured that this issue will be our top priority and will continue to be until a final decision is reached. While I support some of the proposed changes I certainly do not support rolling hunting and trapping into one license. I believe that in doing so we lose our identity as a separate and independant group of stakeholders and are given the appearence of having no real value to the sportsmen's community. I will have more to say when I find out more about the situatiion; for now I would urge every one of you to write AND call your Assemblymember and New York State Senator. Tell them that as trappers we want to pay our own way, that we do not want a hunting license that includes trapping at no cost.

I don't agree with having lower fee's for non residance lic. do you think other states will lower theres for us, i don't think so. i hunt in other states and pay higher fees. everyone complains now about not having enought land, well there go's that. just like i keep hearing about we all have to remember these folks come election time. i been doing that for over 30 years. i guess i am the only one that REMEMBERS. Cuomo is nothing more than a dictator, its his way or the highway.....

Trappers are a minority among sportsmen. Sportsmen are a minority among the population of upstate. Upstate is the minority of NY. Trappers are a stakeholder on wildlife issues. Lets work to keep what we have.

My question is if the Insurance Bill passes. Does the Non Resident who basically is getting the sporting privilages cheaper now than residents, going to have to carry Insurance for the firearms they bring in to the state? Would be only fair, but as we know nothing is fair in Coumo's world.

What if someone is a lifetime hunting license holder. They get there hunting licence mailed to them. How does the trapping license come in because they would need to go get it. Or is a trapping license going to be automatically included in the mailed lifetime hunting license?

What happens to someone who has always bought a trapping license but has never taken the hunter ed. safety course? Will there still be a stand alone trapping license for that person to buy?

Herm, I believe you have to have a small game license along with your trapping so I assume you should have had to take the course at some point.
