The latest uptick in gun and ammo sales will have a positive impact on the pittman-robertson funds available to the state for wildlife projects. Time to start the wish list.

#1: ditch, dredge and pothole ponds all cattail mats in public marshes for improved "duck" (muskrat) habitat. #2: see request #1 #3: see request #2 Amazing though it may seem. Funding Through the Great Lakes Fish & wildlife Restoration Act and Initiative is already Reaping Benefits for Lake View Marsh up here at the Eastern End of Lake Ontario. The Last Two Winters here have Seen Two GIANT Amphibious SHOVELS Digging Potholes, Dredging Canals, and Ditching Inlets into Our vast expanse of Lifeless, Sterile, Landlocked, Drydocked Cattail Marsh Mono-Culture (MATS) to Improve Northern Pike Spawning Habitat, and Increase Muskrat friendly Habitat and open water areas. This Project is Being Spear-Headed by the Nature Conservancy as the lead Organization who helped plan the Project, Networked with the Army Corp of Engineers and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, wrote the Grant applications for Federal Funding Monies Through the Great Lakes Fish & Wildlife Restoration Act (GLFWRA) There is a whole Slew (slough) of projects on the Burner for creating improved Waterfowl Habitat, and restoring the Lake Shore Marshes and Wetlands Eco-System. The Key missing piece of the puzzle that continues to elude the restoration effort is water Level Plan BV-7 which is still being blocked by Lake Shore Raparian Property Owners and their double-wide Trailers built too close to the water. The effects are diminished now, could stand to have them dig thru again because of heavy siltation and woody growth. But still a far sight better than nothing. Here too the real problem is water levels... lake assoc pulls the plug every September, and by November the houses are standing in bare mud and abandonded. If the water levels were higher, those mats of cattails would be submerged and rats would do the excavating work themselves. But all marshes need to be dug lower now, unfortunately.

Maybe you could get after the Region 8 DEC wildlife people to do some remedial restoration work down there again. I'm Not sure if they could get Federal funding for that, but There is usual Money Federal, State , Or Private available for wetlands restoration somewhere.
If they (the DEC) are not going to protect the Natural Habitat by conserving the winter water pool Resource in Canandaigua Lake from draining out of the Canandaigua Outlet, then maybe they SHOULD be spending some Pittman-Robertson funds to restore The West River/Hightor WMA to it's former health.
Sounds like a Good project for you to be Pointman on Austin.

They should shorten the rat season to only a week long for the next 5 years. People don't realize the damage that spring trapping does to the rat population.

walleyed... you touched on a sore subject over here. Last year the DEC saw fit to take spare dollars and install not one, not two but three handicap-access kayak/canoe launch platforms made of all aluminum here. One at the Woodville launch, one at the Rt 245 launch and one at the Canandaigua outlet launch.
All three are portable, seasonal units that are removed for winter to avoid ice damage and theft by renegade scrappers. I was told the unit cost was roughly $50,000 each which knowing the state and seeing how much aluminum was in those specialty units it seems accurate.
So they spent $150,000 total on the chance a wheelchair person or two gets the urge to launch craft by themselves. Never mind they have no way to get back out of the water OR load their equipment alone without help from others. I guess it seemed like such a great idea, they installed one at the Honeoye lake state launch, too.
I've yet to see a single person use any of them. $200,000 could have dug thru a lot of matted cattails in those public marshes.
**
The DEC solution to lowered lake levels is a reconstruction of the Woodville boat launch. After suffering numerous complaints about prop and lower-unit damages to motors, they yanked the two-year new docks last fall and are dredging the launch site deeper. There now... low-water problem solved.

If we could find any ammo to buy the funds would be even higher.I wonder if the rumor of the Feds and police buying up all the ammo are true,if their purchases go toward supporting the fund.

The Feds & law enforsement are probably exemt form ammo & gun taxes just like the million dollar insurancethey want us to by, but if your a law man you don't need it. Every one should be buying any ammo available for whe the day comes.

So they spent $150,000 total on the chance a wheelchair person or two gets the urge to launch craft by themselves. I believe if you looked Deeper OR Further into it, you'd find that those expenditures were funded by FEDERAL FUNDING rather than State DEC funding. If it were up to CUOMO releasing funding the the DEC to provide Handicapped access, those potential Handicapped Boat Launch Users would be crawling along the muddy ground to enter into the water with no boat launch provided. Such is the state of affairs with funding for the DEC. You Can bet there is Federal Funds available somewhere for the Restoration of the Wetlands and Marshes of HighTor/West River WMA The FEDERAL MONEY that installed those Boat Launches comes from the: "Persons with Disabilities ACT" of Congress. Without it there is NO BOAT LAUNCH. If you wait for the DEC to act, you might be waiting a LONG, LONG TIME Somebody needs to start a Grass Roots campaign to call attention to the degradation of the Natural Resources at the south end Of Canandaigua Lake and Research Federal funding options, and write a grant proposal to get your Fair share of that Federal Money. Most of it is going to MICHIGAN right now. Maybe approach the Nature Conservancy about putting up Matching Funds along with the Federal funding and Bypass the DEC if they don't want to act on it. Squeaky wheel Gets the grease. walleyed

I wouldn't even know where to begin with that whole process walleyed... but I'm willing to try. Nature Conservancy has been buying up every chunk of land for sale in the Hi-Tor area past several years, they might be receptive to some type of joint project

I just called my state senator. Told him to expect a large increase in Pittman Robertson funds. Lets be first in line to get that money for wildlife projects. everyone should consider calling their reps also.
I'm trying to understand requirements to get these funds. I think the state funds a project then 75% of the costs are reimbursed by this federal tax. What has me concerned is that the DEC budget was cut 54 million this year. They may not be able to fund any projects.

bob, you are reading "Generation-text" language there. get used to it Austin, Is that some kind of Egyptian Hieroglyphics similar to Ebonics. I've always said that Cell Phones, Black Berrys, Computers, Video games, I-phones, Tablets, and the like will eventually lead to the total disappearance of written, and then, spoken language. When the apocalypse comes, and all technology is destroyed, and the next generation can no longer text, then it will be like Charlton Heston and the "Planet of the Apes". Humans will have forgotten how to communicate. Glad I won't be around, or Wait.....maybe It has already happened. walleyed

I'm surrounded by teens to young 20s here... I read gen-text language just fine. No problem with comprehension here fwiw Holly's youngest son (19) who is in college sent/received 2,800 texts in the month of Jan alone. But his brother (22) who works full-time as a diesel mechanic turned 4,200 texts both ways. I'm with it
