i have a two questions for everyone on here
if you had to bring only one tool with you other than your cables wire and traps what would you bring?
and what is the one thing you would never go in the feild without?

Dear Friend, 1) my trusty Hudson Bay hatchet....2) a piece of nylon rope in my pocket in case I catch myself in a bodygrip trap and can't reach my setters. Regards

Coffee and bagel...............
Your question makes it sound like I'd have traps and cable stakes, so the one tool I absolutely need is my Ground Hog Hammer.
Never go in the field without letting a family member know where I'll be and how long I plan to be gone.

MZ With that you won't even need the stakes or the traps. And will still find a way to get it done. Any body looking to get better should load up on those three things..

A hoe. I trap out of a boat on a river and wack the hoe into the bank to hold the boat there. Then I can set rat traps from the boat. I also use it adjust set locations to better fit the trap. Consider this, a conibear trap is flat on the bottom. So, sometimes there are locations where the bottom is curved and a #160 will fit a lot better with a simple adjustment with the hoe.

My "Rat Rake" ... just finished a fancy one for my friend (heat-hardened hop-hornbeam (aka iron wood) staff with a hook installed in one end)...I wrapped the handle with rawhide to prevent the wood from splitting when screwing in the hook, left a braided wrist loop hanging out, and covered the rawhide handle with beaver tail...also wood-burned some monogramming to give it a person touch! Works great for yanking traps under water, good to have when walking on ice or trail, and is a big help with trapped critters. I also carry my hatchet on my belt.
