Once again I remain canine challenged. I suppose if I had had some time earlier in the season it would have been lots better but this is what I have, so if I want to catch them at all, it's now or never. Once again I am dealing with real educated canids. My haysets are now being avoided and have turned into pee pee posts. I make a set and they work the other side of the property. Once again I am dealing with changable weather. Don't even want to get into that. Once again THE FAT LADY AIN'T SUNG YET!!!!!!!

Thanks Tim, I learned my lesson on the coyotes last year. Have plenty enough trap for them this year but not many coyotes. I'm actually happy for that because I'm not really a big coyote fan. Don't like skinning them. That's probably a big excuse because I'm too stupid to catch them.

oldman, what other sets are you using besides the hay set? Here is my experience with it this year. I have used hay for many years but not in the way that Alan described in his post. So being the person I am and the fact that I enjoy trying out new things I gave it a shot. After all that is how we learn. Great success right off the bat...but for me if I had a miss( too much hay, frozen, or my own stupidity) That set went cold ... and so did the area. Changing lure/bait nothing helped. Normally if i get a miss or make a mistake I correct it add a set or two and problem solved. This may be coincidence but in the wood lots and such that I trap I think the hay is enticing at 1st but one bad experience and they will avoid it like the plague. Just my$.02 I have been using mostly snow or peat for covering and have much greater success especially with the yotes.

I just recently put a few post sets in and some dirt holes. We don't have alot of snow yet. Have about 7 hay sets out. All baited with mouse type bait and gland lure on both sides where traps are. I have had a few work the sets from the ends of the hay pile. I havn't used the doritoes much. Maybe I should try them a little more. I havn't educated any of them myself but I'ts quite possible that others in my area have.

Try making the hay into more of a pile instead of a slice. Had the same issue with them working the ends. Seemed to work better for me that way.

It's funny you said that because my trapping pard and I were talking about it on the way home today. I guess the biggest question is the trap placement. When I first started making that set I did make pretty much a pile. After this new info. from creekboy I guess I started doing it differently. I probably shouldn't have fixed it if it wasn't broken lol. And tmc, I used to make mound sets all the time. They worked well. Never crossed my mind. It's a short crossing by the way ;D
