"Like a Red Headed Step Child" OR "Beaten like a Drum".
Whichever walleyed was this morning when he confidently approached the Bank Den Hole Run set he put in yesterday. Such was the smoking hot sign in this spot.
The scene of disturbance was unmistakeable upon approach, the Stabilizing Stakes were dislodged from the bottom and pulled towards the Den Entrance and the 9 gauge safety wire tether was pulled Banjo String tight in the same direction.
The surface of the run over the trap site was frozen over with a 1/4" inch of fresh ice,and a few whacks and pokes with the ice saw cleared the view so walleyed could peer into the run.
The water was cloudy and the trap had been pulled up almost to the den entrance and was not visible. Removing the stakes and using the end of the ice saw as a hook, walleyed caught the spring of the trap and drew it to the surface. It was disappointingly light in heft and as it broke the surface, it was readily apparent that whatever had been in the trap was now missing.
There was no tell-tale traces of fur in the trap and the trigger wire was appropriately mangled, but no animal.
This is now the 2nd creature in four days to be caught and then escaped the jaws of the MB- 12" X 16" Catch and Release Body-grip.
Walleyed reset the trap with a different trigger configuration and sent it back to the bottom of the run for another try.
While checking a crossover set nearby, walleyed discovered the following tracks in the snow.
what are they ?
Fisher, (I think) as their is no Tail Drag marks over a long distance to be an Otter.
