I left before dawn with My 15' foot Coleman Canoe to retrieve my Last Three flooded traps from a Beaver Colony I could not get to yesterday on foot.
I spent most of yesterday afternoon hoping the wind would subside a bit so I could paddle out and grab the traps without being blown away from the shelter of the Sand Dunes and marooned on the Ice in High Winds.
As my Luck would have it, the winds were even stronger at Dawn than yesterday afternoon sustained at around 40 MPH and gusting to 50, and the Temperature had started to drop precipitously.
A Lake Effect Blizzard was due to Commence at any moment, and walleyed was not relishing the prospect heading out to rescue his Conibears.
The launch on the flooded Ice was uneventful but as soon as the Canoe was away from the protected shoreline the wind propelled walleyed at High speed out to the Beaver Lodge Scudding along somewhat out of control.
The water over-flowing on to the Ice had dropped a bit over night and was only about 5 inches deep.
Arriving at the "Swinging Shirley" not a moment too soon as walleyed discovered one was floating freely in it's Ice hole by it's tether branch and the other was dipped down into the hole at one end and ready to sink to the bottom.
The channel set was still firmly in place and all were unfired and undisturbed.
The traps rescued, walleyed set about to return to the shoreline by poling with a beaver stick in the open Gas holes to the shoreline abeit some 150 yards downwind from the launch point.
While plunging back up-wind through the shoreline cattails dragging the canoe, walleyed discovered that the beavers had re-occupied an abandoned shoreline Bank Den where he had whacked 3 beaver last spring, so The MB- 12" X 16" Mega-Death was set and dropped in to the well scrubbed, polished, hard bottomed, Wide- Bodied Run.
Hopefully it should produce a nice prime winter Beaver in the Morning.
Arriving back at his "Compound" walleyed discovered he had been visited by the "Mink Fairy" who had left
a Nice, Prime, Dark, Bull Mink on his outdoor skinning table.
I was Happy to add it to the Fur pile !!
Stay Tuned.
