Checked my traps this morning and I noticed that one of my mb550 traps was snapped with nothing in it. Upon further investigation i found that one of the cast jaws was broken in half. I I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems with the cast jaws on thier mb's. From the tracks it was obvious that there was a coyote in the trap . I don't know if the jaw broke when it fired or if the coyote managed to break itor if the cold temps had something to do with it.

Did you get it new or used..? If new, I would let the maker know. I have never had a problem

Great people I can't imagin that dry firing would cause this, how many times in the field when we are making a set do we have traps go off unintended, MB traps would soon loose their popularity with trappers if the jaws broke or cracked when dry firing. I would sooner lean towrd a defect in the casting. Just my thoughts on this

Bulldozerjoe is correct. You do not want to dry fire cast jaws. The good thing is MTP will take care of this for you without question. Not only does MTP have great traps they have even better customer service.

i dont now about that i have 100s of mb traps with cast jaws and all have been dry fired 100s of times and have never had one broken jaws i would suspect a defect in the casting of the jaw i have had to replace those so called coyote proff dogs though but thay are cheap just my to cents

There was a post on Tman a while ago about jaws that had an imperfection in the casting. I'd contact MTP.

i dont own a lot of mb traps..... but their all 4 coil...... the ones i broke where all dry fired... Think about it its cast...... you ever try to weld cast. Its not a strong metal. Ma be it was a defect from the company, but iv never seen it in the out doors. It was always in my hand. I dont dry fire mine..... never will...

Being that they are cast iron which is strong on one hand and brittle on the other. The making of the cast can be in diff.ways. Like the sprigs on your truck. I would be leave that the MBs are made to be dry fired because that happens in the field, just maybe that trap got hit or dropped just right and it's a freak thing the happend . Cast iron breaks

I would assume that the 550's are made with a malleable cast which would mean they are not prone to break or fracture like straight cast. Cast can have defects not visible to the eyes (beneath the surface of the cast) such as an air pocket or stress crack caused during the cast process which would cause a weakened area that could fracture like described. But dry firing malleable cast will cause no issues.
