Jim the shiners---I was given--were from 2 to 6 inches-----What I tryed was---any place on a bank where I could make a skuff about 2 to4 inches deep--I layed out the shiners up the bank----inside the skuff--------put a trap at the bottom----started right off catching mink----but also took 3 or 4 otter---a few coon and fisher.I was very happy with the shiners---BUT --soon ran out of them. I did notice they had a lot of scales and they came off -- the fish and stuck to the bank----and I was able to make catches until they were all washed away. The shiners were almost like a flag----they stuck out like a black rock in a 10 acre snow field.

Jim ----- the set is very fast to put in-----the draw back is it can be seen very easily---and I have had traps stolen-----I have pretty much stopped using the set unless I am behind locked gates or am setting in a friends yard.

see your point there also... have a few locked gates...
already been rethinking it some also, we have a good share of those great blue herrings around... was thinking a mixture of some fresh diluted ice fishing, cleaning bucket slime with scales mixed in... jim

I tried running pole set this year. same as for fisher but on a smaller scale. 120 on a tag alder near stream. The set has merits. That being said ; ever use pans on your 120 's ??

Yes ---I have used pans on 120's---and I love them----I put 3 swivels in the chain because a fisher will rely rap up in them---- I put them in boxes.

Love to fish walleyes on Oneida through the ice. Sometimes those "bright silver" bass or "bright silver" white perch sure do get annoying......but I don't really mind.

Hangman set? Hate to be a bother mole but would like to hear the specifics of this set to hopefully add it to my arsenal.

Chappy---I know what you are saying---especially about them white purch---and they work well-------I have a good supply----Iam on Oneida about 7 months a year ----many of our guest save them for me ---If I am lucky many will save the heads ----- if they are going to eat them------(by the way ----- the ones you can get a good filet out of ---- are very good eating.)--- ---Kind-a cut off my supply of white perch- when I started to tell people how good they were to eat.

Went for a walk today------lots of snow-----was trying to walk a hogs back---when up out of the water popped Mr Mink (may-be 40 yds.)----was nice to see him---he must of been hungry ---because he did-not stop and talk.----or may-be he was looking for a girl friend.

well for his sake, i hope he was hunting... cause the second part sounds real scary like ... you know him looking for love and finding you on a hogs back....
how long did you get to check the little bugger out... was he heading towards you or away, nice belated birthday present.... im envious.....
do you like setting willow strips that run down the middle of those dry wash gravel and sand bar mixes that create a short cut... ive been lucky using them... like the ones that catch a lot of debris... seem to catch a little of everything along them ... jim

I like debris piles if thats what you meen. sometimes it pays to punch a hole through them..

I love the trash pile sets rather they are on a short cut --- or on the banks---or in the water---with the number of mink I have seen working them----Id be a bit off center for not setting them-----I like to set a trap out of the water if I can----and cover with hulls or hand ground very --- very dry grass ---or a combination of each. I am also partial to adding bait or tooth pick lure. Jim he did not have to worry about me----I wont bother him on purpose now -----but he better watch-out in the fall ------- besides I think I am pretty-er than you.----

the long row of trash piles collected along them add to it, but i was talking the willow strips that run up the wash side of the flood channel or old channel that was cut off... and leaves a long sand and gravel bar, between it and where the creek runs now... which could be fifty feet away... lots of times they leave a thin line of small willows or other vegetation type of young growth that survived... where the old high water bank use to be... creates a dotted debris or trash pile line sometimes 100 feet long or better... when i see them i get to smiling... if it creates a short cut across the open wash and the wash is 150 feet or better, i get to smiling even more.... kinda hard to describe.... but the willows provide a thin strip of overhead cover, random trash piles... sand and gravel on one side... old channel.... usually dry for the most part on the other.... if that makes sense... jim

JIM-----I know what you are saying----- we have a lot of willow up north----- along with our share of high water----its jest like you described----I cover with dry ground-up grass--- to stop the freeze down. Most of the time I like to put the trap on hulls.----I have cough about every furbearer in the dry wash sets. Most of the time I like to fasten the trap with 1/8 in. cable.

i don't use cable... but usually double up the wire and tie off to a substantial drag...
ever notice say at a spring run entrance to a creek if the down stream side of the run and river bank is a foot or two higher than the run and situate just above a hard bend in the creek that has a good swift current that hits a steep side hill... how many mink will cross the spring run a few feet up in the same spot, if there's a few feet of flat left before the bend and side of the hard hill...
if there's a slight wallow in the bank like an old deer trail, doesn't have to really be that pronounced or even cut that deep... but how many actually hit it, in that spot... kinda think there just a continuation of the trail along the steep hard hill a few feet above the swift water, across the small section of flat... but usually just shows up as a slight break in the contour of the crest of the bank... jim

I have showed that I use a lot of 3 prong fox drags with extension chain. They work well. just dont carry to many to far. Will wire off also.

Mole,
I do the same with grapples on my small creeks. Terrible idea on bigger water!! Anyone here that thinks a good blind set, becomes even better when you can punch a hole behind it??

We need to all get together for a mink gathering at state convention. Maybe all could get together during down time in the demo area this year??? Throw ideas back and forth....

A lot of times a pocket set is nothing more than a baited blind set.
