Today my daughter saw a raccoon by the road when she was going to her car. The coon seen her then ran after her very fast as my daughter was going to her car. She then ran back towards the house, I ran out side (I heard her scraeming) I grabbed her threw her in the house. I was almost attacked by it before closing the door. I ran to get my pistol. She said it was still outside the house. It was rite by the front door. I pushed the door open fast, making it run on the side porch. I then went out make a kissing sound. It charged after me like a bear. I then put it to sleep. we were both sheet scared. The coon only weighed about 15lbs but it acted like it was 50lbs.
I know a lot of you guys will laugh but it was'nt at the time.

Glad you are both ok. Had a couple animals at my place acting that way over the years .One fox wouldn't let me leave the outhouse. Glad I had a good magazine supply to read.

Similar kind of situation happened to a buddy of mine about two weeks ago. He saw a coon hanging out in the road in front of his house in mid-afternoon and acted aggressive when approached but not cornered in any way. He lives right in Durhamville next to the school so shooting it is way out of the question. When he left home to travel to PA for work it was still in the road so he "took care" of it and called me to see if I wanted it. Not knowing if I wanted to skin it I still went over to pick it up for disposal.
When I got over there I found it was walking around on the road still and appeared un-injured. He swore it was dead after their encounter but there was no other dead coon around. It was acting very aggressive towards vehicles driving by at this point and he picked the wrong truck to walk up to... The Dodge finished what the Toyota couldn't.
It's in the freezer now and I was debating skinning or not 'til I read this post. I think I'm leaning towards disposal now. I froze it cuz I didn't have time to skin it when I picked it up.
Can it go in normal garbage pick-up if bagged right?

yes it can I was told to triple bag it. But if it's in the deep freeze state the rabies is now gone. The health dept said that the rabies in in the spinal column and doesn't live long after the coon dies. But I would still bag as it like I said.

Same here, bd, vet said after 72 hours without a warm-blooded host it's kaput. Well, my coon in the above story was shot on a Saturday... Was dropped of at the lab on Wed.. Got the call that it was rabid on Thursday..

Lucky nobody got bit. They are a crazy item with rabies. I had that happen years ago turkey hunting. The coon was out of its mind nuts, running around, screaming. It spotted me, made a 40 mph charge and I sent him home at about 5 yards. Never seen anything like it. It scares the crap out of ya!

I should've been more clear, traps82 - the virus is dead, they can still test for antigens, proteins, physical changes etc. that verify the animal was rabid. Sorry about that. And again, as I've been told, not as I claim to be any kind of authority on the subject. I figure if it's wrong, I surely stand corrected. Thanks. I wasn't picking at you, just wasn't sure they gave you the right info is all.. Reason being, our NYS govt ain't the best.. The after all, made criminals out of cops..
