Pretty common in my area Mike. Usually have at least one every year. Now usually there is a water source close by but not always. Caught one once so far from any water that it left me scratching my head.

caught a couple of males in dirthole sets for fox or coon thru the years. either fish-based baits or "curiousity lures" for fox which often contain a hint of mink or weasel musk
have caught several big buck mink in coon trails far from the nearest body of water... just taking the same overland trails everything else does, I suppose

FWIW, I usually catch about one every other year in a canine set or coon dirt hole. Sometimes I use mink gland lure as change up to catch fox. For years I used Hawbakers red fox gland lure for mink .

Mike, No mange, had a nice female last week that a coyote chewed on , but left alive. Still brought $40 put up. Seeing a few rubbed now and with the snow going it will get worse. Saw a lot of fox road kill here in the early summer . not good for numbers. With the dry summer ,no mast .grapes or apples around here this fall either. Small game numbers is down. Just fooling around out here , to busy for a dedicated effort this year. Only got a few out to keep me from going nuts.Did a little more deer hunting than usual this season . Harvested three altogether which I put up myself. Been away from posting for quite awhile, but read this forum regularly. Really enjoyed the series on snow sets. Take care

Mike, I think about everybody I know has caught an incidental mink in a fox trap. Except for me and you.

Maybe they don't like the the hay set mike.. LOL just joking. step-down construction is the secret ;D I bet part of it has to do with trap choice? Considering darn few mink ever visit a canine set, the smaller coils with light tension are more apt to trip than bigger coils with a bit more pan tension involved. Either way, I think I've caught maybe two male mink at fox sets out of 1,000s made and 10,000s set checks cumulative over all my time afield. Setting nearer to moving water might increase that a tad, but the incidental rate is low for everybody.

Really, Possums, Lucky Lucky Lucky The past few years it doesn't seem like our possum or skunk numbers here are high or even real plentiful... but there were times in the past when those two critters were everywhere. I used to make mink sets with fresh muskrat for bait, sometimes mink lure added in pocket sets, rock cubbies, hidden baits in rootwads, etc. When possum numbers are high, you can't keep them out of mink sets here. Once snow falls, possums tend to follow water real close, like hugging the waterline and wading in it when possible. Nothing more deflating than checking a mink set, seeing the trap gone, pulling up the wire and first thing that comes in sight is a possum face or tail tip. Ugh.

Better than a bottom edge set...If yes would you care to share your technique? bottom edge sets are location specific... they don't work just anywhere & everywhere. That would be my go-to mink set when possible, but gotta have more to work with than that. sure can tell mink prices are high this year... guys are lined up with mink sets at every culvert and bridge crossing around here. serious trap thieves would have a field day following man tracks in the snow right now.

would you care to share your technique? Mike, you are always welcome to ride along with me any time I have a decent line out for whatever target species. I am sure we'd have a real good time together and I'd learn plenty from you in the process. Don't think for one minute I would not be soaking up everything you had to share, same as with most other trappers I'm with, extremely few exceptions to that. Last summer's invite to fish bass with us here, bowfish carp in the summer, fish my ponds with your daughter any time still stands. If you're in the neighborhood this year, let's have some fun together in the outdoors.

Caught my first one last year, then followed it up with another this year. This years was caught in a #3 Northwoods. Didn't have to worry about him pulling out.
