Is there a differance legal differance under the ECL Laws between a pistol and a revolver? The reason I ask is the law states you can not be afield with an auto loading pistol with a barrel shorter than eight inches. However the laws repetingly refer to pistols or revolvers as if they are refering to them as being different types of guns which of course I know they are, but I am wondering if they are different under the ECL Laws as far as restictions as stated above.

where did you see this law about auto loading handguns. As far as I know you can carry any handgun you have a permit for.

Re read your rule book. The part I think you are miss understanding is the part about hunting with a semi auto with a magazine capacity of more than six rounds EXCEPT autoloading pistol with less than eight inches of barrel.
Were they put that word except makes it leagal to cary and use a semiauto holding more than six rounds as long as the barrel is less than 8 inches.

Thanks,I went back and reread it.I sure dont like the way NYS gun laws are written.I have asked several people including heads of NYS sportmans orgs.SCOPE, and law enforcement people and they cant even agree if we can open carry on an unresticted carry license. The answers are about 50/50 one way or the other. However I tend to agree with the ones that say we cant.I wonder if we can open carry on the trapline? If we can I would like to get it in writing with they way things seem to be going in regard to all the recent events.

My permit issued through Delaware county says license to carry pistol and according to our clerk means it is a full carry permit and you can carry any way you want concealed, unconcealed, or partially concealed.

Right here is part of the problem with allowing all counties to make their own rules in regards to right to carry permits. .

Right here is part of the problem with allowing all counties to make their own rules in regards to right to carry permits. . I do not think the counties have that right. The same law applies to all counties outside of NYC.What the counties do is issue the permits. However having said that, some seem to make the process more difficult than others.

There are several counties in my area that restrict the use of handguns to hunting and target shooting unless the holder goes through a training course and can prove that they need to carry all the time. As far as I know even these permits are full carry they just type hunting and target shooting around the outside of the permit.

In my area the only chance you have to get one is to put hunting as your reason...personal protection or anything of the sort will get you denied every time.

Wayne County is lucky I guess compared to some of the others. We have one of the largest SCOPE chapters in the state. At our monthly meetings it is not unusual to see in attendance the county sheriff that issues the permits and at least once a year the judge that approves the permits. That does not change the fact that NYS gun laws are poorly written and difficult to understand. To see for yourself ask a few people like I have, heads of NYS sportsmens groups, law enforcement,DEC, or gun rights orgs.,or do an internet search and see how many think differently on if you can open carry or not.
