Hello everyone, I am in my junior year in high school, which means that I must start my stressful search for a college.
I want to study to be a DEC officer, and should probably go to a environmental school.
I would just like to know if anyone knows a good college that could have the major that I need. I have heard of a few, ESF, Paul Smith's. Any help is appreciated, Thank you

Finger Lakes Community College has a Good Natural Resources- Conservation Associate's Program from which you can Transfer to a four-year institution. Likewise Cobleskill has a Good Natural Resources Conservation Program.
Finger Lakes also has a Good Criminal Justice Program so you can Take a Dual-Major of Conservation and Criminal Justice.
At Finger lakes, Many of my Conservation Classmates enrolled as Dual Majors and went on to become Environmental Conservation Officers in the early 1980's.
Hope This helps.

i can tell you my son is in his junior year at Paul Smiths and he absolutely loves it!! its pricey!! (GI bill was the best thing the Govt ever did) but resume wise its a no brainer, his original plan was DEC officer as well but now hes shifting towards the wildlife science (biologist) side as apposed to enforcement, never could keep that boy outta the woods!!! send a PM if youd like to talk with him or have any specific questions (hes currently home on Xmas break)

I second the FLCC for the first two years. Much cheaper. Then transfer to a good four year school like Paul Smiths.... When you receive your BS from Paul Smiths it is the same as the students that went there for four years. Only difference is how much you pay.... I did 2 years at CCC then finished my undergrad at Brockport..... My wife did 2 at Naz and 2 at Brockport. My college loans have been paid off for a while... She's still paying Definitely shoot for a dual major. EnCon is a very competitive difficult job to get into.... Keep your options open and have a fall-back degree..... Good luck! College was the four best years of my life! I wish I could go back! Plus if you do choose FLCC, you can have the Flatiron do all your skinning for ya!

I'm going to go against the grain here...
I have an associates in Env Technology from SUNY Morrisville and transfered to SUNY Plattsburgh and got a BA in env science. In hindsight I wish I had gone to Plattsburgh from the start. During the upper level env classes, the profs kept referencing classes that the other students had taken in their freshman and sophomore years that I had not since I went to the other college. I had a few friends that also transfered that thought the same too. We felt this created an additional level of difficulty as we didn't have the same "background" as the other students.
Eventhough classes may have the same name does not mean they are the same content even in the state system.
I also looked at transfering to ESF and they did not want to accept/transfer about half of my credits so that was out of the question. That may have change in the last 10 yrs though.
Good luck!

I went to cobleskill for my freshmen year, and then transferred to ESF, and that's where I am right now... Studying forest recourses management. ESF is the place you want to be for an environmental degree... IMO

SUNY Cobleskill is an excellent school and the hunting, trapping & fishing in the area is outstanding as well

FLCC is the only place I recommend you look at for your first 2 years. They have a fantastic environmental justice program, and an even better environmental science program. You CAN NOT beat FLCC for the price and location, the Finger Lakes are beautiful! After I did my 2 years at FLCC, I went to SUNY Cobleskill. I'm obviously biased, but I think its the best school to teach FIELD WORK. SUNY ESF (where my wife and several friends went) will not get you in the field as much as Cobleskill. Paul Smiths is also a great field school, but as mentioned above, pricey.
Whatever you do, visit EVERY SCHOOL you are even considering. That will tell you everything you need to know. And good luck with being and ECO, I scored in the top percentile during the last round of tests and have yet to be canvased... If you like working most holidays and during all hunting and trapping seasons, its the job for you!

Hi there-
I am on the Geology Alumni Advisory Board at UB and work with many students both in high school and in college (I actually just gave a presentation today to over 300 5th graders on the importance of education!) ...feel free to shoot me an email and maybe we can set up a time to chat...I have a bunch of connections and can help you prepare for your college application. That is great that you are not too modest to reach out for help! That's exactly why I'm on this site...reaching out for trapping help!
Good luck!

I am a senior at Paul Smith's Right now and I am also pursuing to be a Environmental Conservation Officer when i graduate in May. Let me put it this way if you wanna go to an awesome school Paul Smith's is the way to go, with a little time management you will be able to do plenty of trapping and some classwork. Ive trapped there for 2 years now and its the best decision ive ever made, would never change it a bit. PM me if you want to talk i can tell you anything you need to know
