i ran a small line behind my house this week. i think my locations is ok, but i just can't seem to get the foxes to work my dirt hole!!?? i check my set and there will be fox tracks in the dirt on the edge of my dirt pattern or off to the side. not sure what to do. i run my trap about 7"to 9" from the hole. i feel if i have it back much farther its to far back.

try this for an experiment: stop covering the traps with dirt of any kind, and just cover the set with green or dried grass from location, imported grass clippings, imported grassy hay. see if that helps close the deal

I'd be 3-4 inches from the hole, pan the low spot, maybe some guide stones....give the fox one place to step when he checks out that hole.

Like Mac says move your trap closer, plus if you can put another trap 10 -15 yards apart . (double your chances )

Dear Friend, I've hung up the sifter and trowel when it comes to fox trapping......Using what I call a "staked down bait" set. No dirt, peat or hulls. Just 2 traps 2-4' sliders a small bait some call lure and urine.....a deadly critter catching set.......In my opinion this set is by far a better fur catcher than the classic dirt hole set. Regards

yesterday I was checking sets without my remake gear, found two possums in different locations and made the resets bare-handed. No new lure, just scrubbed the trap jaws with dirt clumps, made the set by hand and covered with fresh grass.
this morning, each set held a red fox. The more I trap fox, the more I realize how simple a creature they really are.
I've been asked if grass coverings can equal dirt for masking odors on the trap for fox. Pete & Ron Leggett used to wear those $1 a pair yellow cotton gloves when setting traps, or no gloves at all when weather was warm. They caught more fox than anyone who has ever passed thru this message board with exception of PHB. They also won the first coyote trapping contests in AZ on the Navajo reservation, and they caught more coyotes along the Brazos River in TX than any big-ego trappers from up north.
So if they ain't too concerned with human scent at canine locations, should we obsess over it that much at all?

I've been saying that human scent isn't a big factor at all the demo's I've given for quite a few years now and don't wear gloves unless it's cold or muddy and only then because I don't like cold & wet hands ;D
