ive trapped a few rats every year but have just started takeing it serious sense last year so ive never really paid any attention to wether or not color had any impact on price? the reason im asking is i have one pond i trap that the rats are really darker than any other of the locations i trap.they are really dark brown with hardly any color variation even on there bellys.2 that ive taken this week(one this morning) have been black on 3/4 of there backs and a super dark brown on there bellys, real glossy and without a doubt the best looking rats ive ever seen, they will allso size to a large .im thinking i may just keep these two for my self.........gotta get a new camera i really wish i could post a photo for you

Years ago all black rats brought a premium but I haven't seen that in a while and from my experience a' rat is a 'rat is a 'rat and size is the only determination in price

Wayne is mostly correct. To the Chinese, a musquash is a musquash is a musquash (remember the rat is revered in China!) with the size being the determining factor in price. They shear and dye most all muskrats and produce plates for the fur garment trade. However, talk to any manufacturer in North America and they will tell you there is a very big difference in muskrat qualities and they are very fussy about utilizing the highest quality muskrats for the fur items they manufacture. All muskrats are not created equal in quality and not all of NY's rats are the best either, contrary to popular belief. There are big differences in the true quality of muskrats, not just from state to state, but even within this state and others.
