Just read it in the latest issue of the FFG... Enjoyed it! I can't even begin to understand the drive it takes to trap 1K Fox in a single season. There's absolutely no time for ANYTHING else in life.....
Impressive to say the least!

Just got my issue yesterday…..great article for sure. I admire the way he has stuck with one set, one type of lure, essentially one method for trapping fox. He uses a step down dirthole, gland lure and urine. A curiosity lure along with gland on start-up but remakes are a gland lure/urine mix. Peat moss for the covering, no pan cover. Simple and quick. His methods are close enough to my own that I gained confidence in just reading the article even though I’m just a hobby trapper. He keeps it simple, shows that we shouldn’t over think the fox trapping thing. Get a hole in the ground, something to draw the fox in, a spot for him to step, and get plenty of sets out. Simple recipe for success.
Russ Carmen did a nice job on the article, but what stands out the most to me is Phils quiet humility. He doesn’t look for recognition, it comes his way because of the reputation but he is comfortable in just trapping for himself. Obvious tremendous drive and stamina, it’s easy to admire the man. Highly recommended reading.

Phil Brown definitely is the essence of a true trapper. He's the real deal as far as I am concerned

Fox dance??
the thread is about Phil Brown, maybe some comments from others on what they think of the article or of the man himself. Austin...I respect your posts but sometimes you try to make the thread about "Austin".......it's not, it's about Phil Brown. No where in your post do you even mention him once. I think this is what happened in the Hay set thread....Alan was trying to make a thread/blog about his methods, you kept interjecting and I think that was not taken well. Just saying.

Not a bad article at all. Carman writes very well. One thing I have to say about Mr. Brown cannot be said for a lot of other so called well known names. What is that? He will always take time to help someone out.
No matter how busy Phil is he will always answer his email. I had a bunch of questions at one time that would have required a lot of time spent typing and he gave me his phone number. I called and talked with him. What a down to earth nice guy.
Now there are lot of nice guys that are great trappers that will take time to answer email or even shoot the breeze on the phone, you know that as well as I do. But at times you will run onto guys that are just too important to take time to chat unless they are trying to sell a product such as a DVD, lure etc.
Phil is never too busy to be decent.

Big deal. I like and respect Phil Brown. But he gets plenty of praise without out you guys jumping all over Austin for talking about the step down. What are you guys cult members. That said Phil is maybe the hardest working ,money making trapper in the USA.

I admire the way he has stuck with one set, one type of lure, essentially one method for trapping fox. He uses a step down dirthole, see that part in bold right there? I caught a lot of bullshit, or just plain nuts if you will in the other thread for defending my "system" as being based on the step-down concept. so now I see where the top fox trapper anywhere is adulated for amongst many other things, basing his "system" on the step-down concept. do y'all see the relevance here? where are the guys with their too-big coilspring traps because they ain't learned how to steer a fox paw yet denigrating Phil's choice to use step down sets? Why don't we see those same supposed trappers touting their #3 elephant traps set on top of the ground to catch an 8lb animal scoffing at Phil's use of step-down logic? ** fair enough, I'm content to let everyone else figure it out. maybe two drops of muskrat urine and #3 coils are the missing link for everybody struggling to catch fox. maybe not. I've got nothing more to say about fox trapping here than what's been said already. please carry on.. and nice article, Phil. I bought the mag off newstand just to read what you shared

do y'all see the relevance here? ) Nope....none...this thread is not about your retribution..if you are happy with your method then who cares what others think. Just move on. Alans thread won't cause me to change my methods, but his ideas and methods are another great tool for the fox trapper. It is as simple as that. Again, I respect your posts and willingness to share ideas/thoughts. The hay thread got out of hand and muddied the thread, let's not let that happen here.

Again, I respect your posts and willingness to share ideas/thoughts. The hay thread got out of hand and muddied the thread, let's not let that happen here. The other thread referenced began as a conversational initial post by the OP and proceeded as such. I mistook that thread, and quite frankly the whole message board concept as a virtual meeting place where trappers can visit, exchange ideas, challenge thoughts and concepts, agree and disagree like adult gentlemen. In other words, visit and learn for all. But I was wrong with that assumption. It appears forums are best suited for off-topic conversations and replies of "atta boy!" and "way to go!!" and "nice catch!!". That's all perfectly fine, but to be honest Facebook already serves that purpose much better, with a lot bigger audience there. So I'm retired from attempts to talk shop in detail online. It don't work... too many people mistake conversation for bragging rights. Ceste' Again, no one is trashing this thread. I agree 100% with Phil's article his use of step-down set logic, gland/urine mix after catches, #2 coils as good choice of traps, hard work being the secret to solid catches... everything you said earlier mac, I agree with. Same as my earlier post. No different than one guy saying how hay sets are the gospel and other guys saying they use them too and why. Matter of fact, I happen to cover all my step-down sets with hay from first snows to stake pulls. So I agree there too, given the chance to say so in civilized conversation. If anything other than "atta boy Phil" is inappropriate in this thread I'll happily delete it all upon request. Other than that, it'd be nice to see more thoughts on trapping from Phil if time - desire to do so ever fits his schedule.
