i just got permission this year to trap this CSA farm. i have always done dry land/dirt holes set. this farm had a rather large marsh/swamp and a pond. i was told the pond is about 6 feet deep. these are my questions: How much weight would i need to put on the heavy end of the drowning rig for coon or rats? how would i know if there are any rats in this swamp/pond? the owner told me he never saw a rat in the pond. could that be possible? i didn't see any sign of rats ,, but plenty of coons, yotes fox. and possibly bobcats ,, no one has trapped this farm for over 30 years. there are a few houses on the property that are rented out. he dosnt want me shooting that close to the house, so a drowning rig would be the only way to work coons at the pond site..

You wont need much weight for the coons a burlap bag with some rocks in it should be fine, if you can just stake out into deep water put your trap on the slide wire thru a swivel that should be all you need , just stake well. To find rats look for cuttings and droppings on logs

It could be possible that there are no rats, there harder to find these days , but take advantage of the coons .

i dont want to use coni traps, there are houses near buy and i am sure there are domestic cats running around lose. killing someone cat would be a sure way of getting bounced off the property digger i am sure its loaded with coon. no one has trapped it for anything, and the only hunting has been for deer, and there are plenty of deer there also ,, i have to be careful not to screw up and piss off anyone. shooting in the morning close to a house or killing someones cat or dog with a body trap would be two sure ways of getting me bounced out of there.. i live in lower dutchess county. just finding a place to bow hunt is tuff. finding a place to shotgun hunt is like impossible, asking somone if you can place traps on their property is impossible.. hell one farmer to ld me ,, theres no coons on my property, he liked the fox and coyotes " they take care of the rabbits and mice" that was a 450+ acra apple farm, one of the biggest around

Maybe you should invest in a hi-power .22 air pistol for the dispatch. And DPs for the coons.

Use those .22 CB caps that Zagger uses. They sound like an air rifle going off.....

it don't matter much anymore.. i was told to leave the property at 8 am opening morning.. the farmers reason ,,, i drove my truck across a piece of grass that he said he was trying to keep nice.. i just drove across it, did not spin my tires or anything, just left tracks in the frosted grass,, i was called on my cell and told to pull all your traps and get off the property.. wow.. that was quick!!! i hope the coyotes eat all his sheep .. i shot a spike this morning on my property this morning ,, at least the freezer is full for the winter
