My twin boys will be 12 and able to hunt small game in january. Does anyone have any suggestions for rabbit hunting in the northern zone. We live in williamstown but our rabbit population has gone from thin to nearly non existing. I havent hunted them here for about 15 years.

Andyt There's got to be plenty of places to take the kids out to shoot a few rabbits. I'd getb out and check out a few industrial parks and pick up a Gamo Pellet gun to let th kids shot the rabbits with. Also you can stop by a few farms locally to get permission to hunt on. You should take them out & get some squirrels as well. Have they shot any guns? If not a cheap Mossberg 410 pump would fill the bill for rabbits and squirrels. Wally World has them for $249. A couple of boxes of #6 shot at $8 a box and you have a few times out at an affordable price. When the weather warms up you can buy a cheap hand clay pigeon thrower and let them shoot a few clay pigeons, It you have a 22 caliber rifle you can take them out and set clay pigeons up and let them soot them and watch them bust up. You got the best time of their life to get them in to hunting and fishing. Come apple blossum time get them ot bullhead fishing, a few weeks afterwards get them out and get a mess of bluegills & sunnies.

They both have 20ga shot guns that they have been shooting for a couple years now. They have a mechanical clay pigeon thrower and love to shoot up a box of shells. They have been pecking away at red squirrels here at home but we dont have any greys.

You should check out some of the State Game Lands a little south of your hometown. I use to live in Broome County,There is several State Game Lands it that area. Up in Chenango County there is State Game Lands as well. If you get down around the Syracuse area you'll find grey squirrels and lots of cottontail rabbits. I never hunted that area, but I'm sure you would be able to find some state land and private land to hunt on. On the West side of RT.81 south of Syracuse there is a area I'd like to go deer hunting. It's that section where it looks like it slide down, A long piece with like a cliff half way up the hill side. There is alot of places along the highway that looks like good squirrel & rabbit country. If you did a little day trip I'm sure you'd get permission to hunt a few places. If I end up moving back there I'm going to get a couple of Beagles for rabbit hunting, If It happens I'd take you & the kids out for a rabbit hunt. It's tons of fun.

I realy miss it we used to hunt them a lot when we were kids but the owls, hawks and other predators have wiped them right out. My cousin next door to me raises beagles and is a trial judge for competetions. He bought property in maine so he could keep hunting snowshoe hare. I thought about checking out the state land around cicero and clay. Its about a 45 min drive south from here but if i can get them some rabbits its worth it

the coyote and rabbit population is a funny thing
every ten years or so the populations rise and fall when coyote is up rabbit is down
but vise versa for rabbit and coyote
right now rabbit is down everywere but coyotes is extreamly high give it a few years and you should have more than enought rabit

Coyotes get quite a few but the biggest predator a rabbit has is owl's. They kill far more rabbits than any other predator. My nabor had about 30 rabbits in a pen about 35 achers. The owl's just about cleaned him out
