Has anyone tried trapping woodchucks? I've been setting a 110 Conibear at an active hole with a slice of apple on the trigger. Three times I have found the trap sprung, once with the bait eaten off of the trigger wire. Do I need a 220?

First off, a 110 bodygripping trap isn't strong enough to provide a quick, clean & humane kill on a woodchuck. Additionally, please remember that even if trapping woodchucks you MUST abide by the bodygripping regulations and setting a 220 at a den entrance isn't legal.

Cage traps typically work well for woodchucks. IE Havaharts and such

Hi...
Just curious...why would you need bait for a set at an active den entrance?

I been hammering them w/ 160's no bait needed at an active hole. I have also had good luck w/ a little chuck gland lure at the holes that may not appear too active

Just because you're not trapping furbearers doesn't mean you can ignore the trapping regulations. They were implemented to reduce the incidental capture of dogs & cats and trust me, dogs & cats will chase a woodchuck and as trappers we don't need any more black eyes, especially over a woodchuck...
Body-gripping traps measuring 5 1/2 inches to 6 inches, set without the use of bait, must be set so that no part of the trap is 8 inches or more above the ground. Body-gripping traps 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches set with the use of bait, lure, or other attractants may only be used as follows: •Four or more feet off the ground. •In a container of the following design: ◦opening height 6 inches or less ◦8 inch minimum spring notches ◦trap recessed minimum of 4 inches •In a container of the following design: ◦trap recessed 18 inches ◦opening height and width 10 inches or less •In a container of the following design: ◦only one entrance, facing the ground ◦container set so entrance is no more than 6 inches from ground ◦trap recessed minimum of 4 inches
