Got a RoadKill Hotline Call yesterday from my "Roadkill Alert Network" pinpointing the location of a "high dollar" Nicely Striped Skunk which was soon sitting in my Fur Closet.
As I started to skin the male stinker today, I decided to document by photograph the steps to cut around and avoid the vent and Musk glands located on either side of the skunk's vent opening.
First make a cut from foot to foot between the Baculum hole and WELL above the vent opening straight across similar to the "money cut' on a Boar Raccoon.
Next, The key is to slice a VERY shallow cut, with the knife point tip just under the skin in a V pattern from the tail base upward to intersect with the first "Money Cut".
Make this cut either side of the vent leaving a v shaped patch of fur on the carcass.
Peel back the belly fur up towards the upper stomach and you'll expose the testicles of the Male skunk which some trappers mistake for the glands.
Next, skin around the legs, skin around the tail base after knife splitting it about halfway down.
**Warning** don't try to use a tail puller to remove tail bone at this point as the resulting pressure could cause the glands to discharge.
at this point It will look like this:
Next, using a very sharp knife, or my personal choice a razor blade CAREFULLY trim away the v-patch of fur and fat layers away from the vent until the actual glands are revealed. They are actually quite big, and well protected covered with a tough membrane.
Once you've exposed them., it's easy to see, understand, and have a better idea of how shallow you have to make your initial cuts to expose the Glands for removal without fear of puncturing them.
Your sight picture should look like this now:
Now, you can cut the glands free of the Carcass with confidence and without worry of puncture. When making your cut to free the glands, always ERR TO THE SIDE OF CAUTION by not cutting too close.
Now your have these well trimmed Glands to bag, freeze, and sell, or to prepare for removal of the QUILL from the glands for your own lure use:
Be sure to save the skull if still intact to sell to the "Skull Polishers" as it is worth from $3.00 to $5.00 CASH !!!:
And, of course, you'll have this beautiful, durable, winter fur pelt from the "King of all Furbearers" to market for Large Cash Dollars !!:
I hear Grand Pappy Rockwood is Paying PREMIUM PRICES while trying to corner the Novelty Skunk Fur Market.
Thanks for looking.
