I may save mine till next year, there will be no rats around after the mild winter and the high catch number this year. After last summer's drought... if this spring - summer is normal rainfall with no major floods, there will be several times more rats next season than there was this season past

All the money trappers were out this year, every ditch, creek, swamp and pond was trapped out. I pulled my traps for 3 days and when I went back someone had their traps on everyone of my stakes....then to top it off they took all my stakes..I predict a very small harvest of rats next year with a record number of money trappers. Someone stated on Tman they got 14.53 for their rats at a local auction. Last year's average was $8, this years average is $10, next years will be at least $12...lol

Austin, there was no drought last year in part of the state. while in other parts of the state it was a record low rainfall accumulation for the past 100 years. I know of rat pockets in several counties around here on private ground and some remote stretches of public ground where rats went totally untouched. They are rodents... there are lots of them in places everywhere that can fill all voids if given enough water and time

NYrat - I think you will hit $2000 or better, the way the prices have been at the auctions....no problem. Gas going up - always seems to be a coorelation between high gas prices = high fur prices. Plus, you do a nice job of putting up your fur. You'll do well.
Austin - while I agree with good water levels = good rat numbers, many of us are experiencing good water and zero to very little rat numbers. I do know of some areas that seem to be thriving, but also areas that should thrive that are dead. It goes farther than water levels....something else is going on. I have my thoughts on it.
Marshrat - your posts just never seem to make sense, and always are miserable and full of bad karma. Everyone sucks in your eyes. And oh yeah - thanks for the stakes.

trappermac, for sure on the spotty populations. I see places where rats are stacked up in one private flow, and the next one over which used to be (and still should be) equally stacked is empty. this year my well went dry for the first time anyone in this town can recall that (it's an old house) and I spent $300 renting trash pumps to keep filling my pond to avoid low oxygen fish kill. But the local marsh areas were quite full of rats despite it all... until the Canandaigua watershed pulled the bathtub drain and dropped fall water levels two feet lower than summer. 100s of rat houses sat stranded in bare mud by season's opener. Man and his desire to dredge, tile and drain every trickle & flow is a bigger problem than mass trapping pressure could ever be :<( I'd be interested in hearing what other thoughts you have. By Sunday I'll have donated 200+ female carcasses to the biologist study program. Hopefully they got lots of specimens from all over, hopefully something good comes from all that

I hope you break $2,000. The ranch mink were on fire at todays sale, totally new levels. I think mushrats will follow. What people don't understand is that the largest middle class the world have EVER seen is in the up and coming in China. And guess what, they like fur.

Trappermac, it was a joke, I am good friends with Nyrat, and only certain people that are thieves suck.

The person that took them must need them more than me....just seems like a kind of a cheesy thing to do, but the way the economy is I can see how they don't want to invest $14 for a bundle of lathe. I did do a nice job on them too, I cut one end at a 45 degree angle and drilled a hole in the top to wire the trap to.......maybe I will patent them and sell em at the convention next year seeing how they are in such high demand....lol

No, I gather my stakes at the end of the year and reuse them, unless I am on private property and I reuse the same sets every year...I don't trap in mattydale.

I have areas on private property that I trap every year and have been using the same sets for over 30 years. I have been reusing some of the stakes for over 10 years, and yes I leave them there. I pull all my stakes on public land every year and reuse them the following year.

Along Towpath, also behind Tully's, and behind the Gym on Bridge St. are a few places I have seen flagging lately and stakes that were left with no traps. Also a couple spots over by Shoppingtown by Cedar Bay Road and Kinne areas, while Jeremiah and I were setting rat traps last week we ran into it.
