Are you up for a Challenge? As you may or may not know NYSTA is losing money paying for our Executive Directors salary. Dave Miller is a vital part of our ability to carry on our trapping tradition here in NY, without his efforts we would be trapping entirely different, if at all. My first idea was a giant money raffle similar to what fire departments have, but do to legal ramifications we cannot do that. My next idea is a Challenge to every fur catcher in NY and all NYSTA members: I challenge every one trapping this season to donate 5% of their fur sales to NYSTA to help offset the Executive Directors salary. The difference between a $10 muskrat and a $9.50 muskrat means little when running a line but can go a long way toward making sure you can run that line in the future. If there were only 1500 members and each one caught only $600 worth of fur and donated just 5% of that toward paying the salary we would be there. The difference between $600 and $570 is little out of pocket per person but added together will do the job. There are more than 1500 members and I know a lot of them sell more than $600 worth of fur. I know that some fur auctions already collect 1% toward this, if you sell at local auctions tell them to take another 4% and add that to the kitty. If you sell local put 5% in another place then send it to NYSTA when you finish. If you sell at one of the big auction houses write a check for the 5% when you cash your check from the sale. This isn't mandatory but is a challenge. I make my living entirely by trapping and I will be sending my 5%. If I make $20000 this year NYSTA will get $1000 not much difference to me except for the fact that I know there will be someone there fighting for my trapping rights and way of life. Any other takers?

I think it would be cool to gather it all up and present it all at once to Dave next year at the Fur Rondy

Nice to see that a few are willing to accept my challenge. Those that do seem to understand that the cause is a worthy and necessary one. You do not need to be an expert or high volume trapper to accept this challenge. If you only make $100 catching fur and send $5 toward our goal you have made a difference. The difference between $100 and $95 is less than 3 cups of coffee on the line.
This challenge can succeed through the efforts of all that dare to accept it.
Anyone that is buying fur or hosting a fur sale or auction can print off the poster above and display it or contact me through a PM and I will see that you get some.

I haven't been on here in a LONG time. have only done Nuisance trapping for past few yrs...this year I hope to do a little "real" trapping. I have one coon so far going to try for a few beaver. I don't own many traps so don't expect I'll have much to offer but will give what I can.

I requested the full 5% rather than standard 1% be withheld from my GVTA auction sales proceeds before the check gets written. I believe that amount to be somewhere near $210, and I'm grateful for the chance to be part of the support team here
