SALISBURY —
An injured snowmobiler -- apparently followed by coyotes -- walked miles for help Sunday night after crashing his sled in Salisbury, fire Chief David Scheuerman said. The man, described as being in his late 40s, finally arrived at a home on Jerseyfield Road just before 8:30 a.m. "He probably walked 10 miles before he came out (of the woods)," Scheuerman said. "When they opened the door, he fell in." The man, whose identity has not been released, had head and leg injuries from crashing his snowmobile into a tree and was suffering from hypothermia and disorientation. He told rescuers he's been lost for 3 days -- although they later determined he was last seen Sunday afternoon -- and that he'd been chased by coyotes while in the woods. "He was really disoriented and he he just kept saying, 'No more dogs. No more dogs.' ... He had a rough night," the chief said. Scheuerman said there is a pack of coyotes in the area that the man could have encountered overnight. Before stumbling out of the woods Monday morning, the man had last been seen by members of the Salisbury Ridgerunners club when he asked for directions Sunday afternoon, the chief added. Based on where his sled was found, it appears he became lost on the way to his destination, Scheuerman said. A helicopter airlifted the man to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica for treatment. State police are investigating the incident. Rural Metro Ambulance assisted the fire department at the scene.

Dear Mr. Lonnie, Hard to run hounds in that country......Not many roads and lots of posted land that they run you off of. Back when I ran big dogs I lost a couple of coon and cat hounds in that country and never got them back..... That guy was lucky. Regards papabear
