What are you guys catching for numbers ? Seems like Iowa is the place to be for big numbers.I have never caught one in a canine set yet, just in my water sets for rats or mink.

It depends what area of the state as far as coon density is concerned.I dont know about trappers ,but many of the eastern and southeastern coon hunters will drive two hrs west to a nite hunt becouse they like entering events where a lot of coon can be treed, which is not the case on their home turf.It is very common around here to strike a coon track in less than a minute after casting the dogs.

Ed, like Herm said, coon populations vary greatly across the state. There used to be a lot of coon here. Now I can catch four times as many fisher here locally than I can coon. However, where I trap up north, my coon numbers approach 200 in the fall. I do release almost any coon smaller than an xl that is caught in a foothold trap so I dont' have to skin quite that many ;D There are far more coon in western NY though and are of better quality for color than the northern ones.

I grabbed only one of my 19 in a k-9 set. The rest were taken with the dp's. Let 3 small ones go. Seems to be a healthy population down here as well.

fwiw: Livingston, Ontario, parts of Steuben and Monroe counties have been hit hard and repeatedly by distemper. The coon populations in some areas is incredibly thin compared to historical norms. Pockets exist of high density, then very few not far in any direction.
Really hammered the gray fox numbers, too. Coyotes and red fox seem unphased, I'm wondering if its feline distemper where coon are highly susceptible and perhaps grays are too

I would think in WNY, if a guy really focused on coon, and all the stars aligned with a late harvest of coon, some big number catches could be made.

Austin,I dont think what hit the gray fox has much if any effect on the coon. The gray fox have disappeared from around here, but we still have a high number of coon.It could be the samething,I always suspected distemper, but if it is the same strand or what ever,it sure took its toll on the gray fox more than the coon as coon still seem to be in good numbers around here.

I watched Ron Hauser's conibear coon trapping and Mark Stecks coon video and it just seems they are all over in the midwest.I know when I was a kid and the sweet corn was getting ripe my dad would put 220's in the fenceline because they would ruin alot of sellable corn. But we never caught more than maybe 3 or 4 per year on a 5 acre sweet corn patch. But boy a couple could make it look like an army going through. I think there are some good pockets of them. There's no way we are gonna keep up to the boys out in the midwest. They do pile them up. I had a good run this year. I caught 138 but with some that had mange and some young ones that I kicked loose. I have 125 in the shed all put up..The biggest one was 27lbs and caught in a 5x5 in a box..1/3 of them were sows and the rest were boars..

I caught a fair number of coon back in my day, across several counties but mostly Livingston and Steuben with Wyoming, Ontario, Yate and Monroe sprinkled in. I passed thru most of those this year in my quest for muskrats, and found some heavy coon trails in same places as decades ago. I also saw some previously hot trail locations practically devoid of coon traffic. Cornfields on one side, timber on the other... nothing going thru the culverts, no dryland trails.
imo the way to big coon catches today would be baited sets clustered where coon sign is heavy. The days of running pur trail sets are over with here due to spotty populations AND significant urban sprawl eliminating many historical set locations.
In the midwest, they have five to ten times more coon than we do anywhere in NY, and therefore any approach works better there than here
