Well, you take what you can get. I was on my way back in to the woods early on the opening day of southern zone archery (10-16) and I broke up a flock of turkeys. I got to my spot where I was hunting from the ground and decided to try to call them back in. Don't you know that a whole pile of hens shows up. I took time to look for a bearded hen or maybe a straggler jake or tom, but then two of the hens kept getting closer. I was around the backside of a large tree so I was able to draw and shoot this hen at 12 yards. I ended up calling in a flock of jakes and gobblers later, but instead of shooting a jake I waited for a shot at one of the longbeards but they never came out in the open. I also called in another flock of hens and a lone gobbler the next day. I will never forget how blessed this area in Oneida County is with turkeys. I've passed on a few smaller bucks and small does, but I never go archery hunting without my turkey and coyote/fox calls in my pocket. Good luck this season - Eric

Nice turkey, very hard to shoot with archery without a blind! I killed a hen withmy bow 20 years ago, got lucky.
