Three people come into contact with rabid animals in New Hartford & Blossvale
WKTV News (Story Updated: Jun 1, 2010 at 1:56 PM EDT )
(WKTV) - The Oneida County Health Department says three people and nine animals are undergoing treatment for rabies exposure after coming into contact with rabid animals.
Health officials say these incidents happened in the towns of Blossvale and New Hartford.
"These two animals bring to four the number of positive results we've had for rabies in Oneida County so far this year," said Bobbi Jo Girven, the Coordinator for Rabies Prevention and Treatment program for Oneida County.
In these two incidents, two people had contact with a fox in Blossvale and one person had contact wit ha raccoon in New Hartford. All have begun PEP rabies treatment, consisting of a series of shorts over a 14-day period. Had the dogs involved in the incidents not been previously vaccinated against rabies, they would have been quarantined or euthanized. In this case, they required only booster shots.
Officials stress that all pet dogs, cats and ferrets older than three months should be vaccinated for rabies and kept current on their vaccinations.
The next Oneida County rabies clinic is set for Tuesday June 15th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the Boonville Fairgrounds
