Well guys, I am now looking for advice on making a set for foxes using some of your techniques. This type of set is unknown to me as we always snare our large K9s and cannot trap them. I have recently been give a Collarum device for snaring foxes but it requires a set making. The bait is left exposed but the collarum is buried slightly, the fox pulls the bait and fires the noose. I know you guys can't snare but it says on the instructions that an ordinairy fox or yote set would suffice.
So...
How do I get the animal to approach the bait from one direction only? I have never used a lure or scent attractant in my life so what could be used (we have no lure or bait shops here)?
A simple bait of meat will do for the trigger but the whole set up is new to me so any help would be greatly appreciated.
All the best

I would suggest a dirt-hole or flat set as decribed in the set-making 101 section of the Forum here. If you can snare a couple fox you can remove there anal glands & urine and use that as a lure. It will work better if it was rotted down a bit first but it will attract them. Bacon grease is an old time fox attractor that should be easy enough to obtain over there as well of oil of anise, or even cheap perfume.

Dave, put your set in front of a backing that won't allow the fox to come from the backside of the collarum. You might be able to use a piece of brush or something on each side to "fence" them in a little too so that they can only come in one way. I would send you a bottle of lure to use as long as it is legal for you to do so. Just give me a mailing address and I'll send something across the pond for you to try - might help keep your waistline in check a bit better

PM sent John with many thanks.
I have set the collarum under the base of a holly tree in a wooded hedge, using the the bole of the tree as backing (set this morning). The fox can only approach from one side and go around the base of one tree and face the trap head on - so heres hoping...
I used uncooked bacon wrapped around the trigger mechanism (it requires the animal to pull the trigger not push or step on) and tied this on with fine thread.
A good friend of mine was going to send me some lure - but then his trapping shed got burnt down... the smell must have been awful!
Thank you for all the advice guys and if I have any problems or missed catches I will be straight back on here for more advice. I didn't take any pictures of the set but will post some pictures of the catch (fingers crossed) and maybe I will take some pics on the next set so you guys can have a laugh at the limey!
Take care all, and thanks
