Hello Everyone.
I live in Lockport and am looking to find someone that is interested in water trapping next season. 2010-2011
I just became a member of this forum, and I am also an instructor here in Niagara County.
I have been trapping for almost 40 years and would be willing to share the info I have learned over the years by trial and error.
If anyone is interested in trapping the Alabama Swamps with me let me know.

Welcome to the Forum! I grew up and trapped in and around the Newfane, Lockport & Gasport areas until I joined the AF 22 years ago. I still make it back from time to time and even ran a short line a couple years back for a week in Niagara County. Plan to retire back to my house in Gasport in a couple years when the AF is done with me ;D

Thanks for the welcome.
Real nice board you have set up here. When I saw this thread, I figured I would see if there is anyone out there that wants to learn rat trappin' in the "big swamp"
I lived here for many years, and then I moved to Ohio for a number of years, started a charter boat, and wife and I decided to come back to NY.

Spent 25 years in Lockport myself, used to trap around Lockport and spent many years in the 70's trapping the "big swamps". How you guys do out there this year? Was through the swamps a couple times this past season (still own a rental in Lockport) saw quite a few trappers out there, and plenty of rat houses. Looked like it should have been a good season for you guys.

Well on the State side, it was a 25 trap limit, and Only on the dikes, NO marsh trapping at all.
I was out there in July and August, and there was almost NO water where it should have been.
I spent the majority of the trapping season in the woods chasing deer both here in NY and in Ohio, so I did not trap rats this year. I will go after them again in the fall, if the conditions improve.

Wow!....25 traps, we used to run 150 + (2 of us). Those areas where it was dry I assume was to draw down to allow the grasses to change. How bout the federal side? Used to be a lottery and they'd assign you a section.
Just trapping the dikes had to cause some congestion, but then again, with only 25 traps probably not much.

Over on the Federal side they dropped the lottery back in the 80's They had a "high bid" system for awhile, and then they implemented a flat fee of $50.00 per trapper. Which is still in effect to this day. The Fed's have done a bang up job of making the area more accessible. New dikes everywhere. They are right on top of there game, keeping water in the area all season long.
I have heard that the "new" management on the State side, is more concerned with the "song birds" than with the waterfowl as the area was designed for.
I am going to get back to concentrating on trapping, and NOT as much deer hunting next season.
Man I can hardly wait to get back in the water again.
