I was wondering if it is legal to have a #1 1/2 long spring on a float set without any water covering it? I would think it would be since it wouldn't be able to catch anything but muskrats and other swimming furbearers.

What law are you concerned about?

The #1 1/2 long springs jaws open up to 4 1/2 inches. So im not sure if it would be considered legal if the traps wasn't submerged but on the float out in the middle of the pond.

I know of no restrictions on a 4 1/2" trap. From the DEC website:
"No person shall use traps of the leg - gripping type that have teeth in the jaws or that have a spread of jaws greater than 5 3/4 inches except that traps up to 7 1/4 inches may be used under water during the open season for trapping beaver or otter."

I wasn't sure because it doesnt have an adjustable pan tension.

Sure it does. Bend the dog toward the pan to lower the tension and up away from the pan to increase the pan tension.

Neither did I until I talked to a bunch of friends on here. They showed me a lot of ways to modify traps and adjust pan tension. Because there is no set pan tension in NYS, but it has to be adjustable, you just need to be able to explain how you adjust pan tension on your traps

Yes, but most of the ones I have talked to are pretty knowledgeable, at least where I live.

Reckon theres no problem w/ this issue anyway as you are water trapping . If I'm correct the pan tension devices are meant for land trapping.

Yeah. But I though the trap had to be submerged for it not to matter what about pan tension devices.
