Was in my tree stand yesterday and here come a nice red fox. 12 yards. I grunted at him he stopped looked up, stood there 10-15 seconds, then slowly wondered away. About an hour later here came another, little smaller about 20 yards away. Grunted at him stood there broadside, then walked away. I know season is not open yet but would you put an arrow into one if it was season? Is it legal in NY? It crossed my mine, the pelt would not be good but maybe have it mounted have not heard of anyone shooting a fox with a bow. Looking for opions. thanks Bill

Hunting them with a bow is legal during their open season, and the hole wouldn't be as bad as some I've had shot by deer hunters before.

It is legal to shoot them during the season and I have seen 2 so far this season within bow range! Very temping, but after this weekend I will do my best to put an arrow through one just for the experience! I have shot one before with a bow, and with the amount of opportunities, I think I would try it again, given a good shot! Might look good tanned!!

Just remember that you need a small game license or one of the combined licenses that includes small game to hunt fox. A Big Game license by itself or a trapping license by itself doesn't cut it. Season everywhere except Long Island is Oct 25-Feb 15 for fox, raccoon, weasel and opossum.
A full body mount fox is going to cost some serious $$, so if you are hoping to do it then consult with the taxidermist ahead of time to find out how they want carcasses handled - a lot are picky and it can make a big difference with the end product.
The best way to stop them for a shot when archery hunting will probably be to draw your bow and give a quick lip squeak or two. Shooting a fox with a bow doesn't happen every day, so bring a camera if you have one and post the pics soon. Good luck!
