As soon as the velvet comes off a buck is ready to breed so techinally he is in rut. But until does are ready they usually don't get crazy, which is what we call the rut. Kinda like people we are always ready but no action until mama says so.

I saw 6 does together when I was on stand tonight. Do they normally split up during the rut?

From my experience, I see does together all the time. Doesn't matter what time of year. When the rut kicks in, if she is in heat, then she is never alone but being tailed by a buck or two or three

I have seen a group of does running through the woods being chased by a buck. They (the bucks) seem to be locked in on the one that is in heat. Not that I can tell by looking though!!

I agree, I see groups of does right on through gun season, usually one or a couple family groups. When the rut is in full swing that buck will single out the one in estrus (she's ready) and that'll break up the group some for a bit....
